‘Humshakals’ earns 12.5 crore in the opening day
After months of promotion, the Sajid Khan directed multi-starrer comedy ‘Humshakals’ finally released on 20th June, Friday. The promotion seems to have worked as the film achieved a very good opening. On its very first day, the film has collected Rs.12.5 crore. What is more impressive is that the comedy flick has gone past the super hit ‘2 States’ and the Akshay Kumar action blockbuster, ‘Holiday- A Soldier is Never Off Duty’. On its first day, ‘2 States’ collected Rs.12.42 crore while ‘Holiday’ had earned 12.18 crore. ‘Humshakals’ is now the third highest opening day grosser of 2014. The first position is occupied by Salman Khan’s ‘Jai Ho’ which had a first day collection of Rs.17.75 crore, followed by the Arjun Kapoor-Ranveer Singh blockbuster ‘Gunday’ with Rs.16.12 crore. For Saif Ali Khan this the second highest opening after his film ‘Race 2’ in 2013 raked in Rs.15.12 crore. Sajid Khan’s last film, the super flop ‘Himmatwala’ had earned Rs.12.1 crore on the first day.
As per the reports, during the first half of the day, the response to the film was slow. But the attendance improved during the evening and night shows. Both single screen theaters as well as multiplexes had registered good footfall. Despite its good opening it is not sure whether the good run will continue. The critics have responded very negatively to the film calling it mindless and without any sensibility. Such negative review can hamper the business of the film. How it does over the weekend will decide the film’s ultimate fate. To make matters worse, ‘Holiday’ is still running successfully in theaters. ‘Humshakals’ will likely face tough competition from this film. The highest weekend grosser so far this year is ‘Jai Ho’ with a collection of Rs.60.68 Crore, followed by ‘Gunday’ (43.93 crore) and ‘Holiday’ (41.32 crore). It will be interesting to see whether Sajid Khan’s film goes past the Akshay Kumar starrer.
"Humshakals" has Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh and popular TV actor Ram Kapoor in triple roles, with each character having the same name. The female leads are played by Tamannaah Bhatia, Esha Gupta and Bipasha Basu. Satish Shah and Chunkey Pandey also play important roles in the film. The comedy film is a co-production between Vashu Bhagnani’s production house Pooja Entertainment India Ltd. and Fox Star Studios. Himesh Reshammiya has composed the film's music. The director Sajid Khan has written the film script.
