'Ek Villain' off to a thunderous start everywhere

The promos of the film ‘Ek Villain’ have been on air for months. It was hinted that it is a love story with some dark themes. The title of the film was also misleading because while Ritiesh Deshmukh looked like the villain, Siddarth Malhotra too seems to play a darker character. The music of the film also caught on with the listeners. Altogether, there was a decent buzz created before the public release of the film on Friday, 27th June. Now that the film is out, both critics and the audiences will be eager to see whether the film lives up to the hype.

Director Mohit Suri is known for his habit of picking elements from foreign film and treating them in his own unique way. ‘Ek Villain’ has unmistakable plot similarities with the hit South Korean film, ‘I saw The Devil’. Those who have seen the original will surely be disappointed with the typical Bollywood treatment of an otherwise intense, gripping plot. The director has taken a passionate yet violent revenge tale and has almost managed to turn it into a standard Bollywood fare with lots of songs and romantic moments. But it is not a totally disappointing effort. Those who have not seen the Korean film can still enjoy ‘Ek Villain’ as a decent film.

In this film, the love story part is longer than the revenge part. The heroine, played by Shraddha Kapoor is portrayed as an angel like character. She spends her time praying to Lord Ganesha and doing other good things like spending time with kids and getting old people married. But at the same time she is terminally ill. The hero, played by Sidharth Malhotra is a goon who falls in love with the girl and decides to become a decent man and settle down with her after curing the disease. But when something horrible happens to his girl he gears up for revenge. Ritiesh Deshmukh is the bad guy and Kamaal R Khan (popularly called as KRK) plays a shady character too.

Shraddha is again the lively but tragic heroine after ‘Aashiqui 2’. She does well but needs to play a more performance oriented role in future to prove her versatility. Sidharth Malhotra looks very handsome but needs to work hard on his expressions to improve as an actor. Ritiesh is the best performer of the lot and brings quality amidst mediocrity. KRK also chips in with a memorable performance. Now it has to be seen how the audience responds to ‘Ek Villain.’
