‘Ek Villain’ earns 50.70 crore in the opening weekend
Before release there was good buzz surrounding the Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor starrer ‘Ek Villain’ that made sure that the film will at least get a good opening. Not all reviews of the film have been too favorable, with most critics pointing out several negative aspects of the film. However looks like the audience is not too bothered with the reviews as the film has done very good business over the weekend with collections reaching its peak on Sunday. If the business continues to be like this for some time, ‘Ek Villain’ may turn out to be one the biggest hits of the year.
On Friday, the film recorded a good opening with 16.72 crores which is second only to the opening of Salman Khan Starrer ‘Jai Ho’. On Saturday, the film maintained its collection in a solid way with Rs 16.54 cr. Sunday saw the business peak and the film collected more than 17 crores to cross the 50 crore mark. Quite surprisingly, its weekend collections have gone past that of bigger films like ‘Holiday’ (Rs 41.32 crore), ‘Gunday’ (Rs 43.93 cr), ‘Humshakals’ (Rs 40.13 cr) and ‘2 States’ (Rs 38.26cr). While the top position for weekend collection is still held by ‘Jai Ho’ with 60.68 crores, Salman’s film saw a dip in business in the following days which most likely will not be the case with ‘Ek Villain.’
Noted film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh has tweeted, “EkVillain Fri 16.72 cr, Sat 16.54 cr, Sun 17.44 cr. Total: Rs 50.70 cr nett. India biz. MONSTROUS HIT!” Taran Adarsh also wrote, "The weekend business of Ek Villain has been incredible, which has come as a shocker for many within the industry. Keeping in mind its star cast, the budget and the screen count [2539 screens in the domestic market], the weekend numbers of Ek Villain are at par with any big-budget film starring an A-lister that gets an extensive release [3500+ screens in the domestic market]." The film has also done surprisingly good in overseas markets. It has easily gone past the collections of ‘Humshakals’ and ‘Holiday’. In the UK, the film surpassed the collections of both ‘Humshakals’ and ‘Holiday’ in just 2 days despite being shown in lesser number of screens.
‘Ek Villain’ also stars Ritiesh Deshmukh in a key role. The Mohit Suri directed, Ekta Kapoor produced film had done very good marketing/promotioning and it is now reaping the benefits.
