Deepika bags best actress award at Zee Cine Awards
The Zee Cine Awards 2014 was held in Mumbai on February 8. The most popular awards show aired on February 24 saw the glamorous Deepika Padukone win the Best Actor (Female) Popular trophy for ‘Chennai Express’.
Deepika’s role as Meenalochni Azhagusundaram in ‘Chennai Express’ and her Tamil accent in the film was much appreciated. Her characters as Naina in ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and Leela in ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ were praised, too.
The magnificent Deepika won the award defeating her competitors Parineeti Chopra, nominated for ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’, Shraddha Kapoor for ‘Aashiqui 2’ and Sonam Kapoor for ‘Raanjhanaa’.
She got a surprise, when one of her secret admirers replayed a scene of her on stage. It was none other than the famous television comedian Bharti Singh, who decided to do the brave task of carrying her up from her chair on to the stage and without any cuts. While the actress was truly surprised, she played along with Bharti, who also presented the best film nominations for 2013
Deepika has come a long way, since her debut in Bollywood, with Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ in 2007. Now, she is one of the most sought after actresses in India. She is most likely the first actress in the industry with four consecutive films that have crossed the Rs100-crore mark, and in a single year, too.
Analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted that Deepika is the first actress in the history of Bollywood to reach this feat. Her films ‘Race 2’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Chennai Express’ and ‘Ram-leela’, which were released this year, joined the Rs100 crore group.
Earlier this year, the dimpled diva was seen at the Filmfare Awards 2014 ceremony, too. She picked up the award for her role in ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela’, too and featured on the cover looking gorgeous in a floor length gown.
Deepika is the daughter of badminton champion Prakash Padukone. She was born in Copenhagen, but grew up in Bangalore. Although she played badminton at national level championships in her teens, she left her career in sports and joined fashion modeling. She began to receive offers for films, and made her acting debut in 2006 in the Kannada film ‘Aishwarya’
Then she went on to play the twin roles in her first industry blockbuster ‘Om Shanti Om’ and won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
