Court Defers Hearing on Jiah Khan Death Case
Sooraj Pancholi, son of actor Aditya Pancholi, who got into trouble after girlfriend Jiah Khan’s apparent suicide death, has got a brief relief. The sessions court in Mumbai has deferred the proceedings against him till July 21st. Sooraj is facing abetment to suicide charges over Jiah’s death. The court was scheduled to frame charges against Sooraj today. But advocate Shrikant Shivade who is representing him informed the court that a plea made by the deceased’s mother, demanding an independent, detailed probe of her death, was pending in Bombay High Court. As a result, the sessions court adjourned the hearing till 21st July. The court also asked the investigating officer to submit a probe status report and the developments on the case so far.
Both Sooraj and his father Aditya Pancholi were present in the court room. Aditya later told the reporters outside court, “We want a special investigation team (SIT) to be formed as soon as possible.” He said that Sooraj has also filed an exemption plea on which the court is yet to decide. He added “… we have not been given any summons, and I want this investigation to finish as soon as possible.” Jiah Khan was an American citizen who grew up in England and later shifted to Mumbai to act in films. On 3rd June 2013, she was found hanging at her residence. Her mother and sister were not at home at the time. Few days later her sister found a six page suicide note which revealed that she was planning to end her life for some time. It also had a mention of a recent abortion. On June 10th, Police arrested Sooraj who allegedly was in a live-in relationship with Jiah and booked him for abetment to suicide.
He was given bail after 20 days. Jiah’s mother Rabbiya Khan has maintained from the beginning that her daughter did not commit suicide but was killed by someone close to her. She moved to Bombay High Court last October and demanded a CBI enquiry into her daughter’s death. She also wrote to current UK foreign secretary William Hague seeking his intervention in the matter. She has also requested the newly elected government to do a re-investigation of the case. Her advocate Dinesh Tiwari has also questioned the theory of suicide. Sooraj’s father Aditya Pancholi, however has been claiming that his son is innocent and is being framed.
