Confirmed! Zoya Akhtar’s next based on street rappers rolls in 2017
Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar who has made a mark in the industry with critically acclaimed films like ‘Luck By Chance’ and ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, is currently working on her next film which is based on street rappers of Mumbai.
Zoya confirmed about it at the 17th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards ceremony in Madrid, Spain. The ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ maker initially tried to dodge the question at the green carpet. But before making a quick exit, she turned around and announced, "My film will roll next year. That's the plan."
According to a reports, the film is rumoured to be titled ‘Gully Boy’ and will have an ensemble cast. Zoya has already roped in Ranveer Singh as one of the leads and hunt is on for other casts. Zoya and Ranveer have worked together in her 2015 film ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’.
Reports suggests that Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt are being considered for the film, but nothing is confirmed yet.
The film is said to be inspired by Internet sensations like Divine and Naezy from Mumbai, who enjoy quite a fan following. The film also draws extensively from the works of other politically incorrect rappers, including Muck Fodi (Ashwini Mishra) whose music focuses on politician-bashing and Kolkata-based Vik Sen aka Feyago, among others.
In an interview with a popular news organisation, Zoya revealed, “Yes, my next film is inspired by real life street rappers. I watched these kids on the Net and they just blew my mind. I didn’t know that this kind of music was coming out of the lanes and by-lanes of Mumbai. People are so consumed with listening to just film music that nobody pays attention to some serious talent on the streets. That is how it all started.”
“It is too early to talk. The film is not yet cast. We will roll sometime next year,” she added.
