‘Chennai Express’ producer Karim Morani arrested in rape case

Bollywood producer Karim Morani surrendered before Hyderabad police on Friday night for raping a 25-year-old girl on the pretext of marrying her.

Morani surrendered at the Hayatnagar police station in Hyderabad hours after the Supreme Court sustained an order passed by the Hyderabad high court cancelling the anticipatory bail granted to the producer.

“He was formally arrested. After completing the mandatory medical formalities, he would be produced before the court today (Saturday)”, Hayatnagar police inspector J Narender Goud told Hindustan Times.

In January this year, the Hyderabad police have registered a rape case against Bollywood producer Karim Morani for allegedly raping a Delhi-based woman on promise of marriage, police said on Wednesday.

The woman, aged around 25, lodged a complaint with Hayathnagar Police last week alleging that Morani had "raped" her in Mumbai and at a film studio in Hyderabad in 2015, DCP (LB Nagar Zone) Tafseer Iqubal told PTI.

The case against Morani has been filed under IPC sections 417 (cheating), 376 (rape) 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation), 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage) and other relevant sections of IPC, the DCP said, adding the investigations are on.

Morani has produced films like ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Ra.One’ and ‘Happy New Year’, and is also the owner production company Cineyug Films. His daughter Zoa Morani is an actress and had made her Bollywood debut with the 2011 film ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’.

In 2011, Morani had come under the authorities' scanner, after his company Cineyug was found to have links with other companies involved in the 2G spectrum scam.

Morani denied the accusations and claimed that the sexual relationship was consensual.

“The complaint is absolutely false and bogus and filed with the sole intention of tarnishing Morani’s reputation and image. Morani will be taking appropriate steps in accordance with law to demonstrate that complaint is mala fide,” Karim’s spokesperson said.

“He is truthful and innocent and has full faith in the judiciary and is ready and willing to co-operate with the authorities to the fullest extent,” added the spokesperson.
