‘Chennai Express’ earns 314 crore at the box-office


Rohit Shetty directed and Deepika Padukone and Shahrukh Khan starrer, ‘Chennai Express’ is unstoppable at the box-office. Despite receiving a mixed receiving from critics, film was welcomed by audience with open arm. The film not only made highest opening day collection but now it is the second-highest grosser worldwide with Rs 314 crore collections after the second weekend with 314 crore.

‘Chennai Express’ is only few crores behind the all-time highest grosser Aamir Khan starrer, ‘3 Idiots’. It has already left behind Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif’s ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ worldwide collection ‘Chennai Express’ also suppressed this year release, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and ‘Dabangg 2’ worldwide box-office collection.

The film has a south India backdrop and hence it has done a remarkable business down south. It became the highest grosser ever in Andhra and Tamil Nadu/Kerala. Mysore and West Bengal will soon join the list.

Made on a budget of 70 crores, ‘Chennai Express’ is the love story of two people of different language and culture. The film has also done a roaring business overseas, including via paid previews.

It entered into 100 crore club in just three days. The ,movie made 33.12 crores on day one breaking ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ first day collection. On the second day, the collection showed little low with only 28.05 crores nett. But Sunday being a holiday, the rush for the film again heighten taking its domestic collection total to Rs 67.92 crores nett.  On the opening day, there was 80-90% occupancy.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has tweeted about the film's business, "#ChennaiExpress collects Rs 28.05 cr nett on Saturday. This Express is Flying High!"

He further tweets, "#ChennaiExpress is on a record-smashing spree. Thu previews 6.75 cr, Fri 33.12 cr, Sat 28.05 cr. Total: 67.92 cr nett. MONSTROUS Weekend!"

Adarsh has also given the film's business break ups, "#ChennaiExpress is a MASSIVE opener in Overseas too. Thu previews $ 1.29 million, Fri $ 2.3 million. Total: Rs 21.4 cr till Friday. SUPERB!"

Adarsh gives a glimpse of the market scenario as well, "#ChennaiExpress is a hurricane at the BO. Sets 3 records in 3 days: 1) Highest paid previews, 2) Highest Day 1 and 3) Highest Day 2."

Highly promoted ‘Chennai Express’ has done never before business in Pakistan as well. The film has crossed Rs 40 million, breaking all the Pakistan’s box-office records. Since it was an Eid release, the film was highly viewed and liked.

"There is no doubt that 'Chennai Express' has become the biggest box office hit from India since the government allowed screening of Indian movies in the country," Mohammad Qadri, the media spokesman for IMGC, told PTI.

IMGC is the biggest distribution company in Pakistan with its offices based in Lahore and it imports Indian films via Dubai.
