Love is blind and knows no boundaries… be it international boundaries. Some of our celebrities also found love across borders and got married. While some couples continued to lead happy lives, for some, the relationship didn’t work out and they eventually parted ways.
Let’s check out some of the celebs who tied the knot with foreign nationals.
Preity Zinta: The dimpled beauty of Bollywood got married to her American boyfriend Gene Goodenough in Los Angeles on February 29. It was a private ceremony with only close family members and friends of the couple. Preity’s friends Sussanne Khan and designer Surily Goel also attended wedding. Months later, Preity and Gene, a corporate professional, held a lavish reception in Mumbai on May 13, which was attended by who’s who of Bollywood.
Celina Jaitley: The former beauty queen who featured in films like ‘Janasheen’, ‘No Entry’ and ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’ got married to Dubai-based Austrian hotelier Peter Haag in July 2011. It was a quite ceremony at an old Austrian monastery. Their engagement was, however held in Celina’s residence in Mumbai in 2010. The couple was blessed with twin boys in March 2012. She is currently settled in Dubai.
Suchitra Pillai: The dusky beauty is married to Lars Kjeldsen, an engineer from Denmark. Known for her roles in films like ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Page 3’ and ‘Fashion’ among others, Suchitra is a qualified engineer herself. She met Lars at a common friend’s house and the duo took a liking for each other. After several meetings, the finally tied the knot in 2006 in a Malayali wedding in Kerala, followed by a traditional church wedding in Denmark. They have a daughter Annika, born in 2008.
Shashi Kapoor: The veteran actor married British theatre artiste Jennifer Kendal in 1958. The charming couple met in Kolkata in 1956 at the Prithvi Theatre, where she was a member of a Shakespearean travelling troupe. He fell in love with her at first glance and he joined the troupe to spend some time with her. Unfortunately, Jennifer died of cancer in 1984. The couple has three children – Kunal, Sanjana and Karan.
Milind Soman: The handsome model-actor who was famously involved in a live-in relationship with co-model Madhu Sapre, eventually married actress Mylene Jampanoi. They met on the sets of Indo-German-French collaboration ‘Valley of Flowers’ in 2006. Mylene is of Chinese and French descent. However, the couple divorced in 2009. Thereafter, he had a relationship with actress Shahana Goswami, but broke up with her in 2013.
Madhu Sapre: The former Miss India who scorched the ramp during the late 80s and 90s found love overseas, after splitting with co-model Milind Soman. She got married to Italian businessman Gian Maria Emendatori in 2001 after a relationship of nearly two years. The duo met at a common friend’s place when Gian was in India on a holiday. Madhu currently stays in Riccione, a small town on the east coast of Italy with her husband. The couple has a daughter named Indira.
Sagarika Mukherjee: A singer herself and the sister of popular singer Shaan, Sagarika married Martin Da Costa, a Portuguese based in London. Martin arrived in India in 1995 and met his future wife while working for the music company that managed her portfolio. They first met at the airport when the duo travelled to Hyderabad and slowly came closer to each other and tied the knot a few years later. The couple has two children – Joshua and Michel.
Shweta Keswani: The television actress best known for her role of Gudiya Thakkar in Star Plus hit series Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, was first married to Alexx O’Nell, an American born actor-musician settled in India, in 2008. The couple had also participated in the celebrity couple dance show ‘Nach Baliye 3’. Sadly, their marriage lasted for barely three years and got divorced in 2011. In 2012, she tied the knot with another American Ken Andino whom she met in New York. Shweta and Ken have a daughter born in 2013.
