The Hindi film industry and Indian theatre has lost a natural talented actor, Farooq Sheikh. His last rites were performed yesterday in the evening amidst fanfare. Tears rolled in as his body was laid to rest. He was 65 and family, friends did not expect him to lose at this stage. His body was brought to Mumbai from Dubai yesterday.
Celebrities like Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Satish Shah, Deepti Naval, Sarika, Kalpana Lajmi, Tabu, Zoya Akhtar Farhan Akhtar, Daisy Irani, Jackky Bhagnani, Rahul Bose, Johnny Lever, Alka Yagnik, Sunidhi Chauhan, Alok Nath and others paid their last respect to the actor at his apartment at Highland Park in Lokhandwala Complex between 5 PM and 7 PM.
The actor was buried around 9pm.
The actor is survived by his wife Roopa and two daughters. He had been to Dubai for a family vacation where he breathed his last after he suffered cardiac arrest. His death is a big blow to the film industry.
Farooq Sheikh a great theatre personality debuted in Bollywood with ‘Garam Hawa’ in 1973. He soon became a prominent name in parallel cinema but he continued to act in mainstream cinema as well.
‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’,’ Umrao Jaan’ and ‘Bazaar’ are some of his hit movies. His ‘Chashme Buddoor’ and close pal Deepti Naval, told NDTV, "He was the most natural actor I have worked with. In the nine films, we did together, I never caught him preparing for his role."
In his 40 long filmy career,Farooq Sheikh has worked with noted filmmakers. Shabana Azmi, one of the pillars of parallel cinema in India, said, "Its difficult for me to speak about Farooq in the past tense. It seems that it's a grammatical error. Farooq, inspite of being a quiet person, could fill in the room with his humor and wit."He left his mark on small screen too. He hosted a popular talk show,’ Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai’ for Zee TV, eleven years ago where he interviewed many top-notch celebrities.
