Box-office: ‘Naam Shabana’ mints Rs 4.5 crore on opening day ‘

Naam Shabana’ starring Taapsee Pannu in the titular role, witnessed a slow start at the box-office and managed to rake in Rs. 4.5 crore on its opening day, according to early estimates. The spy thriller was an anticipated movie of the year as it is Bollywood’s first spin-off of ‘Baby’, which was a huge success. However, the movie’s earnings fell short of ‘Baby’ which made Rs. 9.30 crore on its first day.

‘Naam Shabana’ registered an occupancy of 15 percent in the morning shows, which picked up towards the evening due to positive word of mouth. The film received mixed response from critics and audience and Taapsee’s action avatar is being applauded.

The film is centred around Shabana’s life and her transformation as a secret agent. It also stars Manoj Bajpayee and Prithviraj Sukumaran, alongside Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher and Danny Denzongpa, who reprise their roles from ‘Baby’ in cameo appearances.

The film opened in 2100 across India and in 354 screens overseas in 37 countries, including non-traditional markets. “It’s rare that Indian films see the light of the day in non-traditional markets. With ‘Naam Shabana’, we are overwhelmed to have the film releasing across 37 countries. We are glad to have set a benchmark for other female-oriented films with such a wide scale of exposure,” Shibasish Sarkar, Chief Operating Officer, Reliance Big Entertainment, said in a statement.

In the US, the movie will release in 82 screens; in UAE, it will be shown on 43 screens; followed by 28 screens in Britain and 21 screens in Australia. Some of the non-traditional markets that it is being released in are Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Switzerland, Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Maldives, Germany, Belgium, and Surinam.
