Lead actresses who played negative characters on screen


Yesteryear actresses like Bindu, Helen, Shashikala, Aruna Irani were mostly known for their negative roles like that of a scheming seductress or wicked mother-in-law. Now-a-days, lead actresses experiment with their roles and do not shy away from portraying a grey-shaded characters on-screen. Here’s a list of modern-day Bollywood heroines who turned dangerous villains on screen, leaving behind their virtuous avatar.

Kajol:

Kajol has mostly played the role of a lover girl, but she broke the trend and took up the challenging role of a murderer in 1997 film ‘Gupt’. She played the character flawlessly and did full justice to her role. Kajol became the first actress to be nominated for the category of Best Performance in a Negative Role in Filmfare Awards and won the same in 1998.

Priyanka Chopra:

The terrific actress who is making waves internationally is said to be playing an antagonist in her Hollywood debut ‘Baywatch’. In Bollywood too, Priyanka played the negative character of Sonia Roy, in Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Aitraaz’ early in her career. She proved her calibre and the role boosted her career significantly. She also bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role, becoming the second and last actress to win it after Kajol, as the category was discontinued in 2008. Priyanka’s character in ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ also had shades of grey. She played a femme fatale who kills her seven husbands in an unending quest for love.

Bipasha Basu:

The sultry actress played treacherous and evil in her films ‘Jism’ and ‘Raaz 3’. In the former, Bipasha played a sexy lady who seduces a lawyer and makes him kill her millionaire husband in order to gain his property. The film established her as one of the sexiest actresses of the Industry. In ‘Raaz 3’, Bipasha played a fading film-star who turns to black magic to destroy the life and career of a younger actress whom she holds responsible for her condition.

Vidya Balan:

Vidya is an excellent actress and she pulled off her role of a conniving character in ‘Ishqiya’ with élan. She played Krishna Verma, a small town woman who has no qualms to seduce two unknown men and use them to trace the whereabouts of her husband who faked his death in Abhishek Chaubey’s directorial debut. Before, that she has brilliantly performed the act of a woman with mental disorder of dissociative identity in Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Bhool Bhulaiya’. 

Kareena Kapoor:

The actress who mostly played a bubbly lover girl initially in her career, featured in a negative role in 2004 romantic-thriller ‘Fida’. The film also starred Shahid Kapoor, Fardeen Khan and Kim Sharma. In the film, Kareena’s character poses as Shahid’s lover and tricks him into confessing a crime that he has not committed. Kareena also portrayed the role of a disturbed character in ‘Heroine’ very well. She played a film-star whose career is declining and didn’t give second thoughts to tarnishing her image just to be in spotlight.  

Preity Zinta:

The effervescent dimpled beauty of Bollywood, has also played a negative character in 2003 film ‘Armaan’, which also starred Anil Kapoor and Gracy Singh. Preity played the role of a rich, arrogant and obsessive woman Sonia Kapoor, who always wants things her way. Preity’s portrayal of the character bagged her a nomination in the Best Villain category in the Filmfare Awards.
