Bollywood stars condemn Mumbai bomb blasts


On 11 July 2006, Tuesday, Mumbai witnessed a series of bomb blasts in several trains and railway stations which is the lifeline connecting the entire city. Lakhs of people travel by train every single day. There were seven consecutive blasts within minutes of each other. Hundreds of people have lost their lives and many more have been injured. Bollywood has been known to always do their bit for society and this time too many stars have come forth to lend their support and have also staunchly condemned the attacks.
Preity Zinta, Hema Malini, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Rahul Bose and Raveena Tandon are some bollywood celebrities who have condemned the bomb blasts. The bomb blasts are said to be the handiwork of terrorists. Actress Preity Zinta was attending a court hearing at the time of the blasts and was unaware of the serious situation till she saw the news. Preity says “Its time we took some drastic action, Mumbai shouldn’t be such an easy target. We seriously need to think of the city’s security.” Preity also feels that the government should create special time conserving courts for terrorist cases to be handled more adeptly. Veteran actress and politician Hema Malini says “I know that I have a voice because I’m in politics. But how do I use that voice to avert such calamities? Fortunately Mumbai has bounced back, but we must do everything to avoid such incidents further.”

Actress Raveena Tandon is extremely upset with the government for its lack of organizational skills in averting the incident. She says ‘The authorities should start functioning for the city instead of being mute spectators.” Raveena feels that the common man pays a lot of taxes and hence it is his right to demand that the government take more responsibility in protecting the citizens of the country. Director Madhur Bhandarkar too urges the people to be strong in such times and has applauded the common man’s fighting spirit. Director of hit film Rang De Basanti, Rakeysh Mehra says “This isn’t only an attack on Mumbai; it’s about an attack on India. It’s a global issue. We need to undertake a war against terrorism more intensely.”

Several bollywood stars also turned up at hospitals where the victims of the bomb blasts were taken. Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Parvin Dabbas and even Rakhi Sawant went around to hospitals to do voluntary services. Rahul Bose decided to travel in a train the day after the bomb blasts so as to set an example for people. He said “I traveled from Grant Road to Andheri and then back to Bandra for three hours the next morning.” Rahul also chatted with several commuters on the way so as to help passengers get over their fears. Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Rahul Bose and Rakhi Sawant also went to hospitals to donate blood. Lyricist Javed Akhtar strongly condemned these terrorist acts and said “I am shocked at the mindset of the people who could carry out such an inhuman act. I would like to tell these terrorists that although they have been successful in killing people, they cannot kill the spirit of Mumbai.”

Even Aamir Khan who is known to voice his opinion fearlessly condemned the bomb blasts and the killing of innocent people. He termed the act as “an act of cowardice.” Everyone is trying to do their bit towards helping those who have been affected by the bomb blasts and even the film industry has come forth to lend a helping hand. All in all Mumbai’s survival spirit definitely needs to be saluted!
