Bollywood actors who joined politics
Quite a few Bollywood actors have ventured into politics. Some had a long standing political career while others enjoyed short trysts with politics. Here is a list of prominent Bollywood stars who appeared in politics.
Bollywood actor Gul Panag joins the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). She will fight Lok Sabha polls from Chandigarh.
Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan had a short stint in politics in 1980s. He had supported Rajiv Gandhi who was a family friend and stood in UP against the then chief minister of the state, H. N. Bahuguna. He won by a huge margin, but he left politics when his name cropped up in the matter of Bofors scandal.
Though her foray into politics has received much less limelight, Jaya Bachchan has long remained a member of the Rajya Sabha as a representative of the Samajwadi Party.
The southern beauty has remained quite active in politics. She had often campaigned for her friends, but she officially entered politics in 2004 as a part of the BJP. She was made general secretary of BJP in 2010b and has remained an active member of Rajya Sabha as well.
Govinda is another actor who entered politics for a brief period of time. he had won election in Mumbai, but his political career did not last long as his constituency did not benefit markedly and he also incurred a lot of negative publicity because of some unguarded and provocative remarks that he made.
Shatrughan Sinha has enjoyed a fruitful career in politics for some time now. He debuted in politics by fighting election against another celebrity, Shekhar Suman. Sinha had appeared as a candidate for Samajwadi Party in Lucknow. He was given the portfolios of Department of Health and Family Welfare and the Department of Shipping in the 13th Lok Sabha. Currently he is an active member of BJP.
Jayaprada was nominated for Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh in 1996. She joined the Samajwadi Party and contested election in 2004. However, she was later expelled from the party as she was suspected of anti party activities.
Actor Sanjay Dutt also dabbled into politics and appeared for elections from Uttar Pradesh. However, there was a lot of controversy about giving him ticket because of his criminal activities. Dutt later quit politics saying he preferred the atmosphere of films.This does not end the list. Vinod Khanna, Mousumi Chatterjee, Raj Babbar and many other Bollywood stars have also ventured into politics.
