Birthday Special: Top 10 movies of Rajinikanth

Initially, making his mark in the film industry as an antagonist, Rajnikanth has paved his way to Superstardom. On his birthday, we wish him all the best and take a glimpse of the ten best films that made Rajnikanth – The Superstar!

1.Moondru Mudichu – Starting his film career as an antagonist, Rajnikanth starred in this movie, alongside Kamal Hassan and Sridevi. He played Kamal Haasan’s roommate, outwardly encouraging him to romanticise Sridevi, although inwardly hoping to create a rift between the two.  The movie was directed by his mentor K Balachander and saw him as a promising actor.

2. Vayathinile – Rajnikanth created a mark among the audience with his line ‘Ithu eppadi irukku’ (How is it?) In this film, Rajnikanth donned the role of a local village rogue alongside Kamal Haasan and Sridevi. The film won four state awards.

3.Bairavi – This film introduced Rajnikanth to the world as the ‘Superstar’. ‘Bairavi’ was the first movie to cast him as the lead protagonist. His mannerisms and style catapulted him to a new level of stardom.

 4.Mullum Malarum – This film brought out the human side of the actor as the role required him to play a winch operator Kali who is overprotective of his sister. He won The Best Actor Award at the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for the film.

5.Billa – A remake of the Hindi blockbuster ‘Don’, Rajnikanth gave the anti-hero a different charisma with his mannerism and dialogue delivery.

6.Sri Raghavendrar – On completing 99 movies, he wished to make a movie on the life of his guru, Sri Raghavendrar. But the movie flopped as Rajni’s fans could not bear the thought of watching him entering Samadhi.

7.Thalapathy – This was yet another film where Rajni’s fans could not accept the idea of him dying. The film was loosely based on the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana.

8.Basha – In this film, his character was based on a man who sets out to avenge his friend’s murder. The film was well received by all and sundry.

9.Endhiran – The most expensive Tamil movie so far, this film saw Rajnikanth in a dual role, both good and evil. It has been labelled the top notch movie of Rajnikanth.

10. Muthu – Not only was this film a blockbuster in India, it was released in Japanese and grossed a record US$ 1.6 million, replacing Leonardo DiCaprio with Rajni as japan’s trendiest heartthrob.
