'Besharam' badly doomed at the box-office
Expectations were riding high with the Ranbir Kapoor starrer movie Besharam. The opening day response of the film was quite high. It had collected Rs 20 crores on the first day. However, collection has dropped rather drastically on the second day and now stands at only Rs. 7 crores. If the fall continues at this rate, the film will find it difficult to get into the 100 crore club.
Ranbir Kapoor is well known for choosing unusual roles and then for carrying them off to perfection. Starting from his Wake up Sid, Rocket Singh to Barfi and Yeh jawani hai diwani, Singh has shown a good taste in choosing his roles. His last film with Deepika Padukone – Yeh Jawani hai Diwani got phenomenal response. This caused expectations to rise high with Besharam. In addition, the film is directed by Abhinab Singh Kashyap. This is his second outing after having delivered a smash hit at the box office. These two factors combined to create a lot of enthusiasm surrounding the film. Also, it its release time well and opened on a national holiday. All these caused a rush to the multiplexes and the opening day opening shows saw a grand business. however, collection began to fall on the first day itself and the eresult was reflected in the evening and the night shows. The fear came true on the second day as the box office collection fell by more than half. The reasons for such bad performance are not far to seek. The film boasts of a casting coupe as this is the first time that the whole Kapoor family including Rishi, Neetu and Ranbir has appeared together in a film. The spoofing of Bollywood characters and references to the cinemas of the eras gone by are nice touches, but these have failed to rescue the story which seem to go nowhere. Critica have slammed the film and audience have come out disappointed after sitting through a two and a half hour long movie searching in vain for the turning point which would salvage the film. The negative word of the mouth publicity has resulted in a collection of mere Rs. 7 crores. Except for a few key circuits like Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, the film did not do well. A critic Sridhar Pillai tweeted, “Stepped in 4 #Besharam, nearly 75% of full house audiences r girls in the 14 to 25 age group. Ranbir surely has a huge female fan following”. It remains to be seen if Ranbir’s popularity cab rescue the film.
