Arjun, Alia starrer ‘2 States’ join 100 crore club
The Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt starrer ‘2 States’ has continued its good run at the box office for 4 weeks now and has reached the 100 crore milestone. It is very good showing by a movie that has no Bollywood A-list star in its cast. It has become only the second film this year (2014) after Salman Khan’s ‘Jai Ho’ to reach this feat. Overall it becomes the 28th film in Bollywood to enter the exclusive, ‘100 crore club’. What is encouraging that the 100 crore figure is based on domestic collections alone which means if overseas collections are taken into account then the film’s earnings will become even more impressive, it will be approximately 133 crores.
Noted film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh had tweeted last Saturday, that, “2States' overseas total [after 3 weeks]: $ 5.6 million [? 33.59 cr]. USA-Canada $ 2.08 mn, UAE $ 1.23 mn, UK $ 806k, Australia $ 379k.” The next target the film can achieve is surpassing the lifetime domestic collections of ‘Jai Ho’. The Salman Khan starrer had earned 116 crore at the domestic box office. If the young stars can beat one of the top stars of Bollywood, they will surely earn some bragging rights.
Despite having to cope with releases like ‘Revolver Rani’, ‘Kaanchi’, and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ on second and third week, the film came out well. During the fourth week, six films were released – ‘Koyelaanchal’, ‘Hawaa Hawaai’, ‘Khwaab’ ‘Mastram’, ‘Yeh Hai Bakrapur’ and ‘Manjunath’. But luckily for ‘2 States’ none of these films were able to make much impact on the box-office. In addition, Rajinikanth's blockbuster, ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ had its release postponed. This indirectly benefitted the run of ‘2 States’ at the box office. Though there was almost 80% decline in business in the third week, compared to the first week, a good word of mouth kept the audience interested and the film performed slow but steadily.
The film did so well due to a number of factors. The story was based on a popular novel by Chetan Bhagat which increased its appeal to the youth. The film was also well made and the lead pair of the film performed very well in their roles. It is the third film based on a Chetan Bhagat novel after ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Kai Po Che’. Both the previous films were very successful at the box office.
