Anupam Kher turns a year older today
If acting is to be the sole yardstick of greatness- there is every reason to laud Anupam Kher as one of the premiere stalwarts of Bollywood. Having had his exposure to the world of theater, Anupam Kher-one of the ex-alumnus ‘National School of Drama’; made his tinsel debut with the film- ‘Aagman’.
Born on the 7thof March in 1955; Anupam Kher happens to be the only actor on the horizon of Bollywood to have won eight Filmfare Awards in succession of one another. Following his debut in 1982; ‘Saraansh’ released in 1984 epitomized the sheer excellence of Kher’s classy acting. Only twenty-eight years of age as of then, ‘Saraansh’ had Kher essaying the role of a retired person buckling under the loss of his only son.
Having had roles to play in more than four hundred films, Anupam’s illustrious kitty of honor includes international acclaim as well. Besides featuring in an acclaimed assortment of Bollywood bonanza, Anupam Kher’s journey through the overseas arena includes films such as ‘Lust, Caution’, ‘The Mistress of Spices’, ‘Bride and Prejudice’ and ‘Bend it Like Beckham’.
The actor with his known forte in comedy is equally forthcoming in serious, villainous and dramatic roles. This comprehensive sway over different facets of acting marks Kher’s impression on commercially packaged mainstream cinemas as well as those belonging to the off-beat genre. The versatile actor with his mastery over the essential facets of acting could make himself comfortable in commercial flicks such as ‘Darr’, Mohabbatein’,’Kuch Kuch Hota’ and Veer- Jara’ amongst several others. Boasting of an amazing array of awards and recognition, Anupam Kher had startling roles to deliver in offbeat wonders such as the recently made ‘Main Gandhi KO Nahin Mara’ and ‘Daddy’ made way back in 1989.
Kher’s passion for acting also includes a few regional films such as ‘Pranayam’ and ‘Yaraan Naal Baharaan’. While the former was made in Malayalam, the latter happens to be from Punjab. The living legend with his treasure of experience also had roles to play in the administration of film making. In recent times, he was the chairman of the Board of Censor. ‘Om Jai Jagadish’ released in 2002 marked Kher’s advent into the realm of direction. Being the owner of a production house, it is expected that the stalwart will have more to deliver for the tinsel world by way of filmmaking and directing.
