Abhishek Kapoor’s ‘Kai Po Che’ portrays Indian middle-class youth
Abhishek Kapoor’s films have always portrayed male-bonding and friendship among young boys. In his recent film ‘Kai Po Che’, the director has tried to explore the dreams that the young middle-class youth in India has.
The film has been adapted from the third novel of Chetan Bhagat, ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’. The story is set in the back drop of Gujarat. Although like his previous film, ‘Rock on’, this film, too, has friendship on the limelight, comparing them together; the dramatic narration of the films will find heaps of difference.
The characters of ‘Kai Po Che’ are extremely relatable. The film has its roots deep in the social condition of the middle-class and its youth culture. Abhishek has said that the film is all about how much a young chap of India wants to make money, wants to become successful and have a girlfriend. He has also revealed that this film would be far bigger than his previous film, ‘Rock On’.
Abhishek has also given several reasons for the film being big. He says that not only the central theme of the film is friendship, but it also has several other points of concerns. It has religion, earthquake, politics and cricket and even riots in it. Scaling the film with his previous project, it is far bigger than what ‘Rock On’ had been based on.
He got the idea of making this project when Chetan gave him his book to read. The characters inspired him very much and he decided to make a film. He feels that through the film, the picture of ‘real India’ would come into focus. Changes have been made to the book for the sake of the screenplay.
Abhishek has chosen fresh faces of Bollywood for his film. Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh and Rajkumar Yadav have played the lead roles. The film needed new faces as the story has the youth and major Bollywood superstars are above 40 years of age. This made him cast young and fresh faces. It also seems that the director is very happy with the three leads. He has said that they are extremely talented and they made the shoot pleasurable. He did not have to run around to fix dates or trivial matters like choosing their attire.
The film is scheduled to release on
22nd February and is currently on post
production stage. The sensitive themes explored in the films have the
intentions of inciting the viewers. The main focus is on friendship.
