‘Aankhen’ sequel announced after 12 years
The heist drama ‘Aankhen’ came out in 2002 and was directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. The film featured a powerful cast, comprising of Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal, Sushmita Sen and Paresh Rawal. The film was a critical and commercial success. The film had an interesting ending and many thought a sequel would be made. Eventually a sequel was announced in 2006. But the director Vipul Shah and the producer Gaurang Doshi had bitter fallout.
Trouble had actually started on the film’s sets because of creative differences between the two. But the boiling point came when on the film’s official DVD the director was not given any credit. The front-cover only had the producer’s name and on the back-cover the director’s name was written as Vipul Doshi instead of Vipul Shah. Gaurang Doshi denied any involvement in the missing credit issue and Vipul Shah threatened legal action. In the end the sequel was shelved.
After 12 long years, the producer Gaurang Doshi is once again gearing up for the ‘Aankhen 2’. This time he has decided to hand the director’s mantle to Anees Bazmee. Co-incidentally, Bazmee also had a feud with Vipul Shah during the making of ‘Singh Is Kinng’ where Vipul was the producer. Anees Bazmee confirmed the news and said, “Yes, Gaurang and I have met over Aankhen 2. I am right now in Ahmedabad for a function. As soon as I return to Mumbai, we will finalise the details.”
Gaurang Doshi is happy with the development regarding ‘Aankhen 2.’ He said, “Twelve years seems like a long time to sit on a sequel. But what to do? So much has happened since then. Aankhen 2 will have a completely new cast. But I can assure you, the actors would be as exciting this time as they were in Aankhen. God willing we’ll make a stupendous success. Anees is the king of successful sequels.” It was being said that only Amitabh Bachchan will return from the original cast but nothing has been confirmed yet. Vipul Shah should not mind too much at the news as he has own successes. His latest film, the Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Holiday’ is doing very well at the box office.
In the original ‘Aankhen’, Amitabh played bank manager Vijay Singh Rajput who plans to rob his own bank as revenge after losing his job over an incident. He hires Vishwas (Akshay Kumar), Arjun (Rampal) and Ilyaas (Rawal), three blind men to do the robbery and blackmails Neha (Sushmita Sen), a teacher for the blinds, to train them.
