Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota - Music Review

Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota means ‘What if things were like this’, it is produced by Shabbir Boxwala and is the directorial debut of veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah. The film revolves around the lives of several different sections of people who are ultimately connected with each other through their common goal. The film basically comprises several separate episodes but is joined together by a common thread. The film is expected to be more of an offbeat film and hence there is not too much scope for the music too. There are a few situational songs in the film but the songs fall in the below average category.

The music has been done by Viju Shah and the lyrics have been written by Sameer. The singers include Kunal Ganjawala, Sunidhi Chauhan, Javed Ali, Madhushree, Kirti Sagathia, Devchand Gadhvi and Joi Barua. Also noted actor Paresh Rawal lends his vocals for a song in the film. The star cast is a mixture of veteran and fresh talent including Paresh Rawal, Jimmy Shergill, Irfaan Khan, Karan Khanna, Konkana Sen Sharma, Ayesha Takia, Ratna Pathak, Saroj Khan, Ravi Baswani, Suhasini Mulay, Imaad Shah, Ankur Khanna etc. Even the promos of the songs on air don’t provide too much of hope for the musical score of the film.

‘Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota’- This is the title track of the film which is sung by Kunal Ganjawala and Sunidhi Chauhan. It’s a soft romantic love song. The song is based on a relationship between two people who miss each other. The lyrics are nice and it has a nice rhythm too. The musical arrangements are more towards the Indian style. The number is a romantic song and has some soul to it. Though it may definitely not be of the hit variety or it may not be remembered later on, at least one tends to enjoy the soft soothing song wile hearing it.
Score: 6/10

‘Ek Baar Jaana America’- This song forms the crux of the subject in the film, as most of the protagonists want to go to America to fulfill their dreams. The song has been sung by the likes of Kirti Sagathia, Madhushree, Javed Ali and Devchand Gadhvi. The lyrics of the song emphasize the virtues of the land of dreams, America. The song says how beautiful America is and how a person never wants to return on going there. The song has been composed in a manner aptly suited to a dandiya celebration. The entire song has an Indian appeal and the music and tunes are a mixture of various styles like the Gujarati and Maharashtrian styles. It also has a bit of a Rajasthani folk tune in the middle. The rendition by the singers is average and the lyrics are highly unimpressive. There is ‘another version of Ek Baar Jana America’ which has a bit of hip-hop English lyrics interspersed in the song. The second version also has Paresh Rawal singing and there is a video picturisation of the song on him. Unfortunately even the video does not manage to uplift the song. A song that is a complete disappointment from the very on set.
Score- 4/10

‘Dance Music-Instrumental’- This instrumental music piece is interesting enough as it has a mixture of various instruments and rhythms blended together. The beats begin with a slow tempo where one hears the strains of a flute, and then some claps are heard in the background, a whistle also makes a brief appearance. The tempo then takes a medium pace and finally moves to a high pace when one gets to hear an interesting Salsa-Latino kind of music. The tune is short but definitely not bad. But once again it’s not a tune that one may remember long after the film.
Score: 5/10

‘Man Ke Darpan Mein’- This track has been added to the album from Om, as there are basically only two songs in the YHTKH album. Several other tracks from other films have also been incorporated in the album. This is a soft soothing song that has a slow pace. It has traditional Indian music as its base and sounds like a morning raga. It puts one in an introspective and melancholic mood. Even though it is not a part of the film, it is part of the album; hence one can listen to this slow peaceful number which is not bad at all.
Score: 510
‘Odhni Odhae’: This is a DJ Suketu Remix number which is also not a part of the film. The track has been given a western feel and it has a Punjabi flavour. It is interspersed with English lyrics and Punjabi lyrics at places. Overall a basic time-pass remix song.
Score: 5/10
‘Pyaar Hai’-This is just another love song which begins with some soft beats and then the pace goes up a bit. It has western musical arrangements but the lyrics are mundane and casual. It has a decent rhythm but again one can listen to the song while it plays, but it is forgettable.
Score: 5/10
‘Tu’- The song is from Mumbai Matinee and begins in a soulful manner. The male singer right through the song emphasizes how much the person he loves means to him. The song is about the love of his life. It’s an average song.
Score: 5/10
‘Yadon Mein’- is a song from Paisa Vasool. It is a soft introspective song with extremely slow and tepid beats. The lyrics too are unimpressive and the song turns out to be bland and does not leave a mark at all.
Score-4.5

YHTKH album hardly has any songs to call it an album, the film comprises four songs out of which one is an instrumental and the other is a remix. Ek Baar Jaana America is a very poor quality song and even the title song of YHTKH is forgettable. The rest of the songs incorporated into the album are only average and don’t really fit into the album. YHTKH is an extremely poor attempt of making a music album.
