The Killer - Music Review

The Killer has been produced under the Vishesh Films banner which is from the Bhatt camp. The film stars the Bhatt blue-eyed boy Emraan Hashmi and the relatively new girl in tinsel town Nisha Kothari as well as Irfaan Khan. The good part is that Emraan is known more for having hit songs in his films rather than his acting prowess. The music score has been done with T.Series label and the music composers for the film are Sajid-Wajid. The lyrics for the album have been penned by Jalees Sherwani. The promos for various songs in the album have been on air for quite a while, unfortunately this time it’s a plain average album from the Bhatt camp.

‘Teri Yaadon Mein’- The song is rendered by Kay Kay and Shreya Ghoshal and is a melancholic and soulful number. The song depicts the emotions of a man who is rendered helpless as he cannot do without the love of his life. Kay Kay’s voice does complete justice to the song and Shreya Ghoshal too is good in her bits and pieces. It has slow beats, but the rhythm is interspersed with a bit of western and a few Indian musical arrangements. The lyrics too are nice and suit the ambience of the song aptly. The number picturised on Hashmi and Kothari definitely works and quite aptly suits the usual Emraan Hashmi mode. There is a ‘Remix Version’ that has a club feel to it. It is a groovy and peppy remix. A pleasant number.
Score: 7/10

‘O Sanam’- The song which is once again sung by Kay Kay and Shreya Ghoshal begins with a few lyrics which have a European influence perhaps Spanish and even towards the middle the Spanish lyrics are heard again. The tune is a blend of Indian and Spanish style music. This one too has beats which are slow paced and a distinct whistle is heard at several places. The lyrics too are average enough and one can also hear the sound of claps done in a way that enhances the Spanish style in the song. Overall a nice number that has a decent rendition by the artists. There is also a ‘Solo Version’ done only by Kay Kay and his style is quite nice. This one too has a nice interesting touch.
Score: 6.5/10

‘Abhi Toh Mein Jawan Hoon’- The song is sung by Alisha Chinoy and has the feel of an item song. It is perhaps a song picturised on Kothari who plays a bar dancer. The song begins with a mujra kind of tune and has a dose of Urdu words interspersed. Alisha’s rendition is a little different but at times it sounds too raunchy. The beats are paced averagely and one hears the chords of a tabla, ghunghroos and dhol in the song. Unfortunately the rhythm is not catchy and neither do the lyrics impress. A forgettable song that could be revived a bit perhaps by Nisha’s picturisation.
Score: 5/10

‘Hibbaki’- The word probably has its origin in the Arabic/Urdu dialect, which goes on to give a Middle East feel to the song. The tune and rhythm is very Middle East and the song is sung by Suzanne with Hamza and Earl joining in periodically. The song also has some English lyrics thrown in. Beats are average and rhythm emphasizes the Arabic tune. The film is set in Dubai which gives the song just the right appeal. Although it’s a situational song, the lyrics are average and the song too is listenable and makes for a time-pass number. A ‘Remix Version’ that has a lot of bass and is a dance number is prevalent. The beats also pick up a notch and the overall effect is not bad.
Score: 6/10

‘Yaar Piya’- the song has been rendered by Sunidhi Chauhan but is one of the weakest tracks in the album. Her rendition is screechy and below average for most part. It begins with an old style which is an instrument that sounds like a glass on a bottle and is heard throughout the song. A number of other instruments join in too. Even the feel and mood of the song is too out dated. A situational song once again with average beats, a non happening rhythm and plain lyrics. A song that can barely be remembered and one that is a poor attempt.
Score: 4/10

‘The Killer’ album has only two to three songs which are pleasant like Teri Yaadon Mein, O Sanam and Hibbaki which is average, but the other two songs bring the album down quite a bit. And this album only obtains an average score. A disappointment from the Bhatts and Emraan Hashmi who have gotten used to doling out hit numbers at least as far as the musical score goes. The album makes use of a lot of Urdu/Arabic lyrics but that too does not manage to lift the album. The usual good poetic lyrics from a Bhatt film are missing. Hopefully the picturisations will be better.
