Raavan - Music Review

RaavanAR Rahman’s music directly touches our heart. Its very rare that his offering fail to impress, his composition is always deviated from the normal and when anything new comes from the bag of director Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman together, the music is bound to roar loudly. Here’s the past record which shows their superb combination Roja (1992), Bombay (1995), Dil Se (1998), Saathiya (2002), Yuva (2004) and lately, Guru (2006). And now coming to rock the chartbuster is the music of film ‘Raavan’. The film has been shot in the deep jungle of Kochi and the music of the film has been composed with very fact in mind. The music superbly goes with the theme of the film.

The music is traditional folk based, energetic and mesmerizing. On listening, one would definitely fall in love with it. Expectation from the film is very high and it is justified also because it has a combination of talents like Mani Rathnam, A.R. Rahman, Gulzar, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. Versatile singers like Sukhwinder Singh, Vijay Prakash and Mustafa Kutoane has been roped in. The songs are situational.

The track opens with ‘Beera Beera’ which in an introductory song of Abhishek Bachchan describing his power and volatile character. The song is a treat for the music goers. It is a blend of Indian and African vocals. The musical arrangements with drums, congo beats, unique sounds of the jungle is what makes the song different. Vijay Prakash, Mustafa Kutoane and Keerthi Sagathia have done a superb job. Their tune goes very well with the song. From the word go, you will be taken away.

The second track goes as ‘Behene De’ crooned by Karthik and Mohammad Irfan. The song has a feeling of true love as well as the panic that the character is going through. It is one of the best tracks of the film and surely adds to the success quotient of the film. Here again the instrumentation is altogether different and the song comes as a treat for the music lovers. Once it is played, the song is sure to drag your attention. When visual and music will go hand in hand, it will have a killing effect.

The third track, ‘Thok Di Killi’ is not as good as the above two but it has a feel good effect. The song has a hatke feeling. The rise and fall in the tempo is mind-blowing. Sukhvinder Singh’s high pitch voice makes it a place here. It is different though not captivating. The song includes high instrumentation and Gulzar’s lyrics goes very well with the dark situation.

The next track is a romantic number that sounds ‘Khilli Re’. Solely picturized on Aishwarya Rai, singer Reena Bharadwaj lends her voice for the beauty. The song narrates a woman’s love for her man and how she is longing for him. The lyrics describe the heart of a woman. It has a classical touch and the soft voice of Reena sounds pretty lovely and it has all the ingredients of love.

Now here comes the song that is indescribable and mesmerizing. ‘Ranjha Ranjha’ crooned by Rekha Bharadwaj, Javed Ali and Anuradha Sriram. The song is very resembling to the song ‘Taal’ from the film ‘Taal’. It is surely going to hit the chartbuster. It has all the elements to impress you. AR Rahman scores high in this song.

The next song is a huge number with ample number of singers coming together to rock. Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi, Kunal Ganjawalla come together to bring out the fabulous outing. The song has an electrifying effect. In respect of music, it is very electrifying. It is a fast number and as it is played, you will rock and roll.

On the whole, the music of ‘Raavan’ is a treat for your ears. 'Ranjha Ranjha', 'Beera Beera', and 'Thok De Killi' are the best tracks of the album. Buying the album is worthy. It is another best offering in the recent times. Rahman has registered another hit that will rule the music world.
