Pyar Ke Side Effects - Music Review

Pyar Ke Side Effects has been produced by Pritish Nandy Communications with Pritish Nandy and Rangita Nandy at the helm. The film is also the directorial debut of Saket Chaudhary. The film has the caption of ‘watch love crash this season’ and has an unusual pairing of Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose. It will be interesting to watch the kind of chemistry this unusual combination has on-screen. Mallika Sherawat too will be seen after a break. The promos of a few songs have already started airing on television and they seem to be quite interesting and nice. The music has been composed by Pritam and the lyrics have been penned by Maya Puri. Singers like Labh Janjua, Rakesh Pandit, Sophie, Earl, Alisha Chinai, Zubin, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kunal Ganjawala, Suzanne D’mello and Mika Singh have lent their voices for the album.

‘Pyaar_Karke’- A pop Punjabi track by singer Labh Janjua. The song is funky and fun, there’s some interesting English rap by Bob and Suzy which add that touch of western influence. The central dhol beats of a Punjabi song are ever present and the lyrics are casual and average. Beats have an average pace in this version. It is definitely a good dance-club number that will make one gyrate to its rhythm and music. It begins in a peppy manner but towards the end it seems to run out of steam. There’s a ‘Remix Version’ that builds up the tempo and is groovier. A time-pass number that is nice.
Score: 6.5/10

‘Dil Tod Ke Na Ja’- It begins with chords from an electric guitar with beats like that of soft rock. Rakesh Pandit then takes over in his ‘qawalli’ mode. Pandit’s rendition has a very indianised style with some semi-classical notes too. It has an assortment of classical and western musical arrangements. A female artist renders some English lyrics in the background and the rhythm, tune and lyrics are of the popular catchy variety. It can be played in clubs and also one can just chill out with this song. A youthful and catchy song. There is a ‘Remix Version’ which has Mika the Punjabi pop singer doing the rendition and the song has been remixed by DJ Kiran and DJ A-Myth. The song has the interesting lines of ‘Please Don’t Go’, the lines of a western number that seems quite fitting for this song. Definitely one of the nicer numbers of the album it’s an above average song that has potential to become popular.
Score: 7/10

‘Jaane Kya’- This song begins with a female English style piece which appears towards the middle too and is rendered in the voice of Zubin. His rendition has a captivating appeal and the song is a fusion of classical and western style of music and rendition. Lyrics are noteworthy and there is a particular classical kind of alaap in the middle. A good song that moves away from the norm in style and rendition. One also hears a number of musical instruments like sitar, violin and harmonium. A very contemporary piece of music which is appealing.
Score: 7/10

‘Is this Love’- This number begins with the strumming of a guitar and then Kunal Ganjawala comes to the fore and lends his melodious voice for it. Sunidhi Chauhan too joins in for a bit. This is a typical soft, light hearted love song in the album. The rhythm and beats are mostly slow paced and the lyrics are just about average. Sunidhi does a good job too but in a slightly higher octave. It’s a traditional, light, soft love song.
Score: 6/10

‘Bad Boy’- This one has three versions, the ‘original version’ sung by Sophie and has a lot of funky, playful hip-hop, rap English lines. Earl too joins in for the singing and Ishq does the rap. It has a more westernized item song feel. This one too has a mixture of Indian and western musical arrangements. The song has been picturised on Sophie who plays the role of a sultry siren in the film. Then there is the ‘Remix Version’ by DJ Sunil Spinz which has Alisha Chinai crooning the tune and Earl and Suzanne lending support. A peppier faster version that has a lot of hip-hop and rap. There’s the ‘third version’ called ‘Allah Bachaye’ which has Alisha singing and rapper Ishq. This mix basically has a dance club feel with rapper Ishq heard right through the song in the background. The lyrics are a bit corny in the beginning but are tolerable. This is basically a fun song which will appeal to the youth although there are too many versions.
Score: 6/10

Pyar Ke Side Effects album is a contemporary modern album that will appeal to mainly the youth and the urban people. It is not a bad album, it has a funky, peppy quotient, but it has a limited appeal. It’s a time-pass above average album that will have a limited span.
