Paheli - Music Review

Remember Amol Palekar. Yes, the one that made you laugh in Golmaal. He has decided to face the audience with Paheli after Daayraa and Annahat. Fortunately for Palekar, this movie is growing big among movie lovers without any publicity at all. You guessed it right, it’s the starcast – Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Sunil Shetty, Juhi Chawla, Anupam Kher and Rajpal Yadav. On the other hand, the starcast alone doesn’t do all the wonders. There are more aspects to a good-substance film such as the music.

The album, very appropriately, opens with Dhire Jalna, a song that has a sophisticated feel to it, away from the disco numbers and remixes that are composed today. Instruments are used very distinctively making the song sound unusual and leaving one’s ears full of sweet melody. The singing talent of Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal is hard to ignore. Gulzar does a great job of penning down the suitable lyrics for this elegant track. Although, the song seems to be stretched needlessly, it’s a good pick. A must for soft-music lovers.

The team effort of Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Madhushree, Bela Shende and Kalapini Komakali comes forth in the next track, Kangna Re. This song again demonstrates the uniqueness and creativity of M.M. Kreem in a classical composition. Kangna Re is a feel good song with fast beats. The music as well as the lyrics provide the song with a Rajasthani mood. However, the beats begin to sound redundant and old half way through the song. Likeable for a short period of time.

Phir Raat Kati is yet another typical Rajasthani sounding track. It’s a fast-paced song that has its beats as its strongest point. Although, the song reminds one of Prem Jaal Mein from Jis Desh Main Ganga Rehta Hai, it is bound to create waves in the music world and just might top the music charts for quite some time. Sunidhi Chauhan and Sukhwinder Singh add life to the song making it enjoyable to listen to. Full of thrill…easily acceptable.

It’s difficult to avoid comparing the situation and music of Laaga Re Jal Laaga to Ghanan Ghanan from Lagaan. The two songs talk about rain pouring down and therefore, feel similar. M.M. Kreem, Sonu Nigam and Shruti Sadolikar carry the song very well. Gulzar’s lyrics are well written, for the most part. Not that appealing.

A slow and evidently sad song, Khaali Hai Tere Bina follows. The use of similar instruments from the other songs continues. The music is not very catchy. Lyrics seem to fit the situation of the song and reveal the sadness of it. Hariharan, known for his soft voice, sings with full dedication to the feel of the song. Bela Shende sounds different and very tuneful. Not likely to catch the audience’s attention.

Mannat Kare is a teasing and playful song that can best be explained by the picturization. Sunidhi Chauhan, Madhushree and Bela Shende sound amazing together, as their voices match leaving the listeners puzzled as far as who is singing which part of the song. Lyrics compliment the song and justify the purpose of the song. Not your usual humming song.

Dheere Jalna instrumental is composed using violin and drum beats that make it high-paced at certain places and slow at others. Absolutely soothing.

All in all, Paheli is an attempt to create a classic Rajasthani album. It is not the regular love-song album, it has a distinct feel to it. That could be good as well as bad for the movie because majority of the population likes fast-beat or conventional albums. On the other hand, the audience might like the uniqueness of the album. Let’s see what the reaction to Paheli is in the days to come.
