Dus Kahaniyaan - Music Review

Dus Kahaniyaan has been produced by Sanjay Gupta’s White Feather Films, the film has ten short stories which have been directed by different directors. There is a huge star cast too and the music too has been composed by various music directors. Four composers (Gourov Dasgupta, Shafqat Ali Khan, Anand Raaj Anand, Bappa Lahiri), two lyricists (Virag Mishra, Panchhi Jalonvi) have done the music of Dus Kahaniyaan. The soundtrack too like everything is huge with many songs having lounge and club versions. Sanjay Gupta has always given good music for nearly all of his films and hence there are expectations that the music of Dus Kahaniyaan too will gradually hit it off. Aanchal, K.K, Sunidhi Chauhan, Mika etc have lent their voices for the album. Also another feature is that lyrist Gulzar has penned a poem for each of the 10 stories in the film which is recited by stars from the film.

‘Dus’ – Dus has a soft rock feel to it and it is rendered by Aanchal and K.K. A short but hard hitting track which has a live feel to it. It has average paced thumping beats with a thumping tempo to it. The song has a raw edgy appeal to it which makes it stand out. The chorus is catchy and the song is rendered well. There is a ‘club remix version’ by DJ Aqeel which has added beats and pep which serve to make it even better. A good rock song.

‘Jaaniye’- An extremely catchy number by Aanchal and Sunidhi Chauhan. The mood of the song remains sombre, but the beats are slightly faster and invigorating. The voices of Aanchal and Sunidhi have a haunting appeal and they render the number in slightly high pitched voices. Musical arrangements are interesting and the rhythm is good. A video for the song has all the female leads shown working out displaying their toned and slim figures. There is a ‘remix club version’ which steps up the beats and pace of the song. A song that has instant appeal.

'Aaja Soniye’ - Sudhanshu Pandey and newcomer Shweta Vijay render this melodious number. It is sweet and soothing, lyrics are poetic and rhythm is touching. It is soft with average paced beats and the musical arrangements are fine. There is a ‘club remix version’ which also has a slightly peppier feel. A nice melodious song.

Nach Le Soniye' – Mika renders this Punjabi Bhangra track in his inimitable manner. The number has the usual dhol beats mixed with a bit of melodious and soulful music making it an interesting combination. The musical arrangements are fun-filled and enthusiastic. The ‘remix club version’ has add on sounds and variations that make it spunky and trendy. A frothy, peppy dance number.

‘O Maahiya’ – K.K renders this number in a soulful manner and Shweta Vijay croons a line or two in a digitally enhanced voice. It has a nice haunting tune and appeal; the musical arrangements are done well and elevate the song making it stylish but yet melodious. The enhanced sounds and beats also give the song a modern appeal. A trendy number.

'Mushkil Kushaa' - Kshitij Tare renders this beautiful number from within his soul. The lyrics are poignant and melody is soulful. Musical arrangements are simplistic as the focus is on the singer and lyrics. A number with slow beats, it is touching and emotional.
'Vichodeya Ne' - Shaqat Ali Khan renders this song which has Sufi elements. It has a bit of Punjabi lyrics incorporated and the rendition by Khan is appealing. The mood of the song is soft, slow and melodious. An appealing number.

'Kaala Peela' - Shaqat Ali Khan renders this soft slow number with confidence. The song has slow beats and average musical arrangements. However its lyrics may not be appealing as it incorporates highly philosophical as well high poetic words. But nonetheless the music is average and fairly decent.

'Bin Tum’ – It has a ghazal feel and has been rendered by K.K and Anand Raj Anand. It is a romantic soft and slow paced number. The lyrics are average and the musical arrangements are Indian. It is a soft breezy and soothing tune that carries one along with it.

'Bhula Diya' – Anand Raj Anand croons this track with ample of depth. It is an emotional sad song with slow beats and pace. The melody is nice and the musical arrangements make it appealing. Lyrics have a poetic feel. There is a remix club version which tampers with the beats and ads on a few sounds. A nice endearing song.

There are poems recited by actors of the film, Nana Patekar recites 'Tere Utaare Hue Din' for the story Gubbare with confidence and finesse. Naseeruddin Shah, recites for Rice Plate and the lyrics are soul stirring. He also recites ‘Khuda’ for Rise and Fall which is again a poignant poem. Dia Mirza recites 'Bas Ek Lamhe Ka Jhagda Tha' in a soft and soothing tone. Manoj Bajpai recites 'Khaali Samandar' for Zaahir well and also 'Mujhe Talaash Nahi’ [Sex On The Beach] which is average. Sanjay Dutt also recites 'Chaal Chalo Tum' for Rise and Fall in an introspective manner. His voice does justice to the sombre and pensive lyrics of the poem. Amrita Singh recites 'Raat Tamir Karein' (Puranmashi). There are many others too who recite different poems with earnestness. The lyrics by Gulzar in the poems stand out as they are deep and soul stirring.

Dus Kahaniyaan has a mixture of different kinds of numbers, soft rock, romantic, Sufi, Punjabi tracks, etc which is a good balanced blend. The music album of Dus Kahaniyaan is an eclectic mix and there are several club remixes which make you dance. The poems can be heard by audiences who prefer soulful lyrics and light music. An album which is different but yet appealing.
