Drona - Music Review

DronaDrona is a childhood dream of Abhishek Bachchan and his director friend Goldie Behl. Lots of hype and anticipation encircling the film and it cannot be believed that in any way the director will compromise on music. Drona is an unconventional flick and so its music also requires being out of track. Therefore the task of framing the music is given to a unique composer Dhruv Ghanekar (who was a part of the composer duo Ashu-Dhruv). In his introduction, we can say that he is the brain behind Khosla Ka Ghosla, MP3 – Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar and White Noise. With Drona, Dhruv turns an independent composer. Even the lyricist is a new name – Vaibhav Modi.

The album of Drona ends up fairly well but it is nothing exceptional. It is not a listening disaster but cannot be heard repeatedly. Music buffs will not fall in love on listening it at once but will develop interest on repeated hearing. It is true that as it is composed by unconventional singer, the treatment of the music is altogether different. One can experience a newness in the composition. It has in sum five songs which are quite diverse in composition from one another.

The title song is the main attraction of any film. A lot of effort is made on the composition of Drona as it introduces the audience the characters and acquaint them about what the film deals with. A general perception can be drawn from the title track. Dhruv has given the task of framing the title song to Sunidhi Chauhan. Dhruv himself lends his voice for Abhishek and his husky voice reminds us about Adnan Sami and Lucky Ali. Lots of western instruments are incorporated in the song and it introduces to the world a bold savior. It is a jazzy and funky number, on the whole a decent hearing.

The second track of the film titled Oop Cha. It is a foot tapping number crooned by versatile Sunidhi Chauhan. The instrumental set up is top-notch and on playing, one would feel like tapping his feet. It is a club number and the orchestration fills up your mood. It can be treated as a decent dance number. Priyanka is best known to groove on single number and it is another of her type. The song can be far more rejoicing if some effort can be made on the lyrics, impact is bit less.

Soon follows next after Oop Cha is Bandagi. The song is lyrical affluence and comes as a treat in the voice of Sunidhi Chauhan and Roop Kumar Rathod. Sunidhi who is known for her powerful and energetic singing sang softly this time and is a best number for those who die over Ghazals and soft music. Vaibhav Modi’s music is praise-worthy. It will absorb your mind.

Next track to follow is Nanhe Nanhe. The song makes you realize that in the picturisation a mother will be shown showering love on her son and obviously it will be picturised on Jaya Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. When it comes singing a melodious and lullaby song, the first name that strike the mind of the music composer is Sadhna Sargam. Her honey sweet voice best suited for the song. It is absolutely situational and talks about the days of young Drona.

Then arrives the concluding song of the album titled Khushi. It is surely picturised on Abhishek Bachchan having fun with his friends. When it comes to croon for a fun number and lively moments, the responsibility is usually given to the one and only Shaan. Supporting him at the backdrop are Suzzane D'mello, Francois Castellino, Dean and Sunaina Gupta. It is a common joyful number and versatility is missing.

On the whole, Drona’s music cannot be touted exceptional but its novelty will appeal the audience to go for it. It is Dhruv’s first individual work and we can say it is a great effort from a debut music composer.
