Don- The Chase Begins Again is the remake of the original Don starring Amitabh Bachchan. Well even though this is a remake and the basic premise is the same, there is a great deal of anticipation for Farhan Akhtar’s Don. Starring the current king of bollywood, Shahrukh Khan there are already debates whether Shahrukh Khan will be able to match up to the image created by Amitabh. Visually and technologically Don- The Chase Begins Again is a class apart. There is also great anticipation for the music of the film which has been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Some of the earlier essence from the original version has been retained in songs like ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ and ‘Ye Mera Dil’ but there is also an amazing new score. The zing of the instruments, the brilliant rhythm and the techno-savvy sounds that form a big part of Don’s music is simply spectacular. The rhythm is fast, the tune is techno-savvy and the feel and mood of the song is like lounge music. A lot of club tunes and rhythms are incorporated and the overall effect is a mixture of the old and new making it sound quite good. Again a variety of instruments have been used to give the song that zing and edge. Sunidhi sings on a higher note and is not bad in her rendition of the song. Overall a likeable and modern effect is created for this classic song. The picturisation where Kareena dazzles and seduces King Khan rejuvenates the song.

‘Maurya Re’- A spiritual number which celebrates the festival of Ganesh in all its splendor and glory. Shankar Mahadevan gives the rendition and the song is full of zest and energy. The fact that the song has arrived at the same time when the festival of Ganesh is going on is only an added advantage. The song depicts the celebration in an Indian manner with prominent dhol beats, bass, and the traditional shouts of praise and glory. The song is picturised on Shahrukh dancing in a typical carefree manner, with lots of colour and vibrancy in the background. There is a lot of enthusiasm which comes across in the song and the lyrics serve as an inspiration.

‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’- This evergreen number is given a new packaging and covering making the number simply irresistible. Udit Narayan begins with a cool UP style rap and composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy add their magic masala doses of funk, pop but yet maintaining the traditional flavour. The musical arrangements, the rhythm and the pace take the song to new heights. The rhythm has a mixture of Indian and western musical influences. The tabla and guitar chords are clearly heard. And there is a superb surprise when one gets to hear Shahrukh belting out rap in Bhojpuri dialect. The number is high on the fun quotient and though one may not completely understand all the words nonetheless it does not deter one from simply joining in the fun. A fun, enthusiastic number that will definitely appeal to the masses.
Score: 8/10
‘Aaj Ki Raat’- This is one of those retro-pop kind of songs and definitely has a superior touch. The song has techno rhythm and funky tunes but it also has a disco-pop appeal to it. Alisha Chinoy renders a major part of the song and Mahalaxmi Iyer joins in with her subtle yet strong voice. Sonu Nigam too joins in and gives an apt rendition for his part. There is an extremely catchy chorus and the picturisations have both Priyanka and Kareena. The song is a fusion of the 70’s style and modern day music. It has a sensational and deep quality which catches your attention and makes you yearn for more. An absolutely dazzling number that is the revival of the old classic style with a modern day appeal.
