Dhoom 2 - Music Review

Dhoom 2 is the sequel to the hit film Dhoom. The film has been produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Sanjay Ghadvi. The music of Dhoom was a super hit and the promotional song sung by Tata Young was sensational and appealing to the masses. Naturally there are high expectations from the movie as well as its music. The film is one of the most awaited films of the year and this adventurous action packed thriller is said to have loads of hi-tech special effects and some amazing stunts. Dhoom 2 has been shot in some sizzling locations like Rio, Namibia and South Africa. The film has some of the characters who were seen in the prequel, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and several new faces like Hrithik Roshan in a negative role, Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu. The music of the film has been composed by Pritam once again; Salim and Sulaiman Merchant and the songs have been rendered by artists Sunidhi Chauhan, K.K, Sonu Nigam, Alisha Chinai, Vishal Dadlani and even actress Bipasha Basu. The music album has some mass appeal songs and on the whole the music score is above average but unfortunately falls short when compared to Dhoom music album and hence is a bit disappointing.

‘Crazy Kiya Re’- This ‘masti’ or playful song has been rendered by Sunidhi Chauhan and her voice suits the mischievous mood of the song. The lyrics by Sameer are more mass appealing and are naughty and teasing. The beats and rhythm are lively and maintain an average pace. The tabla and flute are musical instruments which stand out and the song has a blend of Mediterranean and Indian style music. The song is interspersed with plenty of English lyrics giving it that slightly western touch. Beats have a punch packed effect; lyrics are vivacious with popular catchy phrases. This song definitely has the ability to catch on with the masses and the ‘Crazy Remix’ done by Bunty Rajput has a slightly faster pace and is made more for lounge hearing with all the scratching and skipping. The remix has an effect which depicts the ‘speed’ effect of the film and hence has a more energetic feel to it. An energetic and fun loving song.
Score: 7/10

‘Dhoom Again’- This is the title track of the film and begins with a very catchy whistle. The tune is reminiscent of the original ‘Dhoom Machale’ tune. Vishal Dadlani croons this number which has a high quotient of English lyrics and he is accompanied by the female voice of Dominique Cerejo. The beats are fast, peppy and heavy sounding. A number of musical instruments like the electric guitar and drum are heard. The tune, style and lyrics attempt to give it an extremely western touch but it still retains a popular mass Indian appeal with its heavy beats and punch packed rhythm. Although the song is peppy and energetic when compared with the earlier theme song which rocked the nation it is a bit of a downer. Nonetheless its vivacious and energetic appeal will make it quite popular in its own way.
Score: 8/10

‘Dil Laga Na’- This modern Punjabi flavoured track is sung by several voices, Sukhbir, Jolly Mukherjee, Soham, Mahalaxmi Iyer and Suzanne D’Mello. Even the track is a mixture of several different inputs like Punjabi beats with dhol sounds, lyrics about heartbreak and repetition of Dhoom time and again. It has some English lyrics and there also seems to be a different Spanish sounding chorus. The beats vary from average pace to fast bhangra paced. The number is said to be picturised on all the main characters in the film so the picturisation will hopefully make it a worthwhile film track.
Score: 7/10

‘My Name is Ali’- Beginning with some soft humming this tune has been sung by Sonu Nigam in his soft and appealing voice. The song is obviously picturised on Uday Chopra’s character whose name is Ali and it barely has two lines rendered by Bipasha. Though the song has some naughty and playful lyrics the tune is the complete opposite with a soft soulful appeal. It’s a laidback, chilled out song where Ali is hitting on Bips and the flute as a musical instrument is prominent. The rhythm is very sensuous and romantic and the pace is low key. In the middle there is a Spanish sort of jig complete with the Spanish like dance beats and claps. Overall a fun and playful number.
Score: 7/10

‘Touch Me’- The sexy, sensual voice of Alisha Chinai and the silent brooding voice of K.K are the vocals for the song. The song begins with yet again a slight Mediterranean feel to it and goes on to add some fast, funky and peppy beats. The lyrics once again are the playful teasing kind, with slightly Latin dance kind of beats emerging. There is also a spicy Salsa kind of tune which should have an interesting Salsa choreography with vibrant colours. But all in all an okay average type of number.
Score: 6/10

As compared to the prequel Dhoom, the music score of Dhoom 2 does not live up to the high expectations. Nonetheless it is an above average music album with plenty of youth centric songs, mass appeal lyrics, lively and energetic beats. On repeated listening and with some lively picturisations and choreography it may find an average appeal during the film.
