Banaras - Music Review

Banaras - A Mystic Love Story deals with a love story, but not in the traditional boy meets girl variety. It definitely has a different angle to it, which is clearly depicted in the title ‘Banaras-A Mystic Love Story.’ It attempts to strike a balance between commercial and art films. Let’s hope that it manages to do so. The music composer for this love story is Himesh Reshammiya in his pre-Aashiq Banaya Aapne days. The music for this album done by him is completely different from his usual masala numbers. Banaras - A Mystic Love Story is directed by Pankaj Parashar and the lead actors are Urmila Matondkar and Ashmit Patel. This album is definitely worth checking out to hear a different aspect of Reshammiya’s singing and composing.

‘Kitna Pyar Kartein Hain’- The album opens with this song, sung by Reshammiya himself. He sounds completely different in this slow classic love song. There are plenty of classical musical instruments used in this song and it has a completely classical feel to it with the usual Raga’s and all. Himesh sings this number in a different style, which is low pitch. The song depicts the suffering that the lover goes through being apart from the love of his life. The same song is sung in the ‘female version’ by Alka Yagnik and is quite nice. The song has decent lyrics, is average and listenable.
Score: 6/10

‘Ishq Mein Dilko’- This is the next song and is sung in the soft voices of Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan. This is a soft, soothing, peaceful love song with a classical background. The beats are slow and the lyrics are good. The song is about how it feels to be in love. Musical arrangement is of the classical variety. The melodious voice of the singers makes this number a decent hearing. The number is repeated once again by the same voices.
Score: 5/10

‘Rang Dalo’- This is a typical holi song that is sung after downing the traditional ‘bhaang’. It’s sung in a carefree spirit, has the typical laughter, banter, and shouts. The song is sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. The classical essence is present in this holi song too and it is a foot tapping number. There is a ‘folk version’ too later on in the voices of Sonu Nigam and the female voice of Sailesh. The picturisation of the song too is a naughty and mischievous one in keeping with the mood. However, it will only perhaps be a light song for the film, but will not be in the category of other exceptional holi songs like Rang Barse.
Score: 5/10

‘Purab Se’- This song begins in a classical raga manner in the sweet voice of Shreya Ghoshal. The song is a spiritual one and has a classical base. The song is in honour of God and has chants of ‘Om Namaha Shivay’. It’s a devotional song that depicts nature. But it will only be appreciated by selective audiences who have a ear for these spiritual songs.
Score: 5/10

‘Yeh Hai Shaan Banaras Ki’- This is the situational theme song in the voice of Sanjeev Abhyankar. This is a fusion track with a lot of ethnic background music and classical arrangements. It is a song about the virtues of Banaras. The background instruments consists of bells, harmonium and conch shells. It is song, which contains lyrics like ‘Har Har Mahadev’ and other lyrics that are taken from the Holy Scripture. This is a fine song about the portrayal of Banaras.
Score: 6/10

‘Bajooband Khul Khul Jaye’- This is a complete classical track that is very short. It is sung by Pranab Kumar. There is a ‘sur taal’ mixed with a ‘mujra’ feeling. This is a different number, which is completely situational to the film.
Score: 5/10

This album is more towards the classical side and will be appreciated by those who are familiar and enjoy classical aspects. The music is more for a mature audience. Many of the songs are situational numbers. Nonetheless, it is a decent album and definitely a different album by Reshammiya. It may not find mass appeal though.
