Awarapan - Music Review

Awarapan comes from the banner of Vishesh Films and hence there are high expectations from the music album. Moreover the film stars Emraan Hashmi whose films always have hit songs. The film has been directed by Mohit Suri and the music composer is Pritam. Some of the singers who have lent their voices for the album include Mustafa Zahid, Suzan, Ustad Rafaquat Ali Khan and Annie. The lyrics have been written by Sayeed Qadri, Asif Ali Baig etc.

‘Toh Phir Aao’- This is certainly one of the best numbers in the album and it has been rendered by Mustafa Zahid. It has the Pakistani flavour all over its styling and rendition. The lyrics are exceptional and strike an emotional chord. The song depicts the emotional pain of the protagonist when he misses the woman in his life but still wants these painful memories in his life. The tune is catchy and the chorus makes one reminiscence. There are three versions ‘Lounge version’ which has a slow paced feel, the ‘original version’ which is the best and finally the ‘Remix version’ which has a faster foot tapping pace and beats. All the versions however recreate the magic and charm of the melancholic tune. An exceptional number that leaves its mark on the listeners.
Score: 9/10

‘Tera Mera Rishta’- This track is sung by Mustafa Zahid again and it is an amalgamation of various tunes and musical instruments. Lyrics are inspiring and the tune has a haunting touching feel to it. The beats and pace are slow and the rhythm is smooth. One gets to hear a Chinese kind of tune and sounds of gongs in the middle which is very Asian in appeal. The song will appeal to the emotions of listeners and the picturisation will perhaps enhance this song. There is a ‘Remix’ version which has some English lyrics thrown in and the beats and pace pick up a few notches making the soft number a foot tapping one. Overall a soft melodious number that is certainly appealing.
Score: 8/10

‘Mahiya’- This foot tapping number has been sung by Suzanne and the lyrics have been written by Asif Ali Baig and Sayeed Qadri. The song has been composed by Annie. The voice has a naughty but sensual feel to it giving the song a chirpy and lively feel. Beats are averagely paced and the tune tends to grow on you. The rhythm has a techno kind of feel and the lyrics are fine. The song has a mixture of English and Hindi lyrics. There is the ‘Mahiya Remix’ which has add-on beats, play on words, added synchronized sounds with all the other trappings of a peppy remix number. Overall Mahiya is a decent number which is enjoyable.
Score: 7/10

‘Maula Maula’- This Sufi track has been composed and sung by Rafaquat Ali Khan. It has the typical Sufi flavour with minimum background instruments. The lyrics in the song depict what the person’s lover means to him and the voice has pain and emotion right through. There is a Pakistani kind of touch in the singing and style of the track. An interesting electric guitar piece in the middle of the song catches one’s attention. A slow paced track that is average.
Score: 7/10

Awarapan album has the Pakistani stamp and flavour over most of its songs. There is beauty and depth in the lyrics, tunes are varied and the musical instruments are blended in wonderfully. The album surely has some wonderful, melodious and emotional numbers which will click with the listeners. A good emotional musical album.
