2 States

Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattacharya

Filmmakers Sajid Nadiadwala and Karan Johar come together for the musical love story ‘2 States’.  The wisdom of the two has rubbed off on the soundtrack of the Arjun Kapoor-Alia Bhatt starrer and the final outcome is good entertainment.

The music has been handled by composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya.

A decent start to ‘2 States’ is Aditi Singh Sharma’s ‘Offo’ that carries the ideal music of an American prom night. Although the music cannot be called exceptional, but what makes the song catchy is the treatment it gets in terms of composition, singing and also the words.

The next song ‘Locha-e-Ulfat’ — a Benny Dayal performance is an instant hit— in fact it is what one can call outstanding. The beats in this foot-tapping number simply grabs attention the way in which they are integrated with the voice and not just to fill up portions as is usually done. The words used here, makes it an urban song of today that matches well with the mood of the film.

This Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy song ‘Mast Magan’ is sung by Arijit Singh. When Singh got a call for the song, he happily obliged to do it. Chinmayi Sripada joined Arijit and both sing it quite well. ‘Mast Magan’ has a Sufi touch, but it is inherently a Bollywood number which will be heard long after the film is run out of the theatres.

The next song ‘Iski Uski’ is a peppy song that will be played at parties and celebrations, the chorus has been powered by Shankar Mahadevan, Siddharth Mahadevan, Amitabh Bhattacharya and Gaurav Gupta. Later, Shahid Mallya and Akriti Kakkar join the fun.

‘Chaandaniya’ a song by K Mohan has the trademark of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The undertone of the song flows well with the mix of instruments which keeps the pace of the music.

Upcoming singer Yashita Sharma lends her voice to the song which is important for the film.

The next number ‘Hulla Re’ has Shankar, Siddharth, Amitabh and Gaurav coming together once more. This is a Punjabi song with a nacha gaana mood, and the setting is essentially a marriage song.

Shankar and Siddharth are the main singers, who are joined by Rasika Shekhar singing intermittently in Tamil.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy had done quite well with the 2013 movie ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’. With the music score of ‘2 States’, they make a comeback into the Karan-Sajid team.
