Superstar has a mediocre script although there are several loop holes and the screenplay comes across as average. Director Rohit Jugraj does a decent job of executing the material. Kunal Khemu plays a double role in the film. He plays a struggling wannabe actor in one and a superstar in the other. The struggling actor gets to realise his dream one day when he is asked to act as a body double for the superstar. His life then changes and takes a completely new turn. Kunal Khemu gives a convincing and sincere performance. Rohit Jugraj's execution of a few scenes are memorable. However the loop hole lies in the writing, apart from several creative liberties taken in the film, there are some instances that are irrational and illogical which makes the film mediocre. However the film is an average fare.
The film has been directed by Rohit Jugraj and the screenplay has been done by Rahul Singh and Sudip Sharma. The film stars Kunal Khemu, Tulip Joshi, Aushima Sawhney, etc. The music of the film has been done by Shamir Tandon.
Kunal Khemu plays an extra in bollywood in one role. He is struggling to make it big in films, however for now he has to be content with being relegated to the background. However he is not perturbed as he believes that it is only a matter of time since he makes it big as he feels that he has the potential. He is also egged on by his friend Mausam (Tulip) who has a secret crush on him. However he feels his dreams are shattered when he learns of 'Karan' the superstar in the making. Karan is soon to be launched by his father and his pictures are splashed on every magazine and he looks exactly like him.
However it is his very dual identity that ends up giving him a break as an actor. Karan is a star in the making, but he is least interested in acting and is busy with his own antics. Hence Kunal, the struggler is asked to play his double. Kunal is extremely happy and steps into the shoes of the 'Superstar'. From then on his life changes and it takes a whole new turn, with greed, ambition and sacrifice making an entry into Kunal's life.
Rohit Jugraj executes the film adequately and there are several scenes which leave an impression. Rohit is able to keep the audiences engrossed in the film. The plot does have some clichés in the second half but nonetheless is fare. However the screenplay and script could have been etched out in a better manner as it has several discrepancies. Some of the motives of the characters and the reasons for their actions are unexplainable and not convincing. Rohit Jugraj gives both of Kunal's characters appealing qualities. There is a balanced dose of drama, music and action that is entertaining.
However the second of half of the film also drags on as the editing is not up to the mark. The climax is average. The music of the film is good and suits the mood of the film well. 'Ajnabi' and 'Mann Tu Talbat' are songs that have nice music. The cinematography is fine and the dialogues are good.
Kunal Khemu makes a sincere effort and it pays off as he is extremely convincing in both of his roles. Tulip Joshi has a sweet role which suits her perfectly. And Aushima Sawhney also does a fare job. Darshan Jariwala delivers a good performance, Reema Lagoo is fare and so is the rest of the cast.
Superstar is an average entertainer and has a balanced dose of music, action and drama. The script and screenplay have a few discrepancies but it comes across as average. At the box-office it may do average due to Kunal's good performance.
