A fun, light comedy that is supposed to be the USP of Shaadi Se Pehle. Going with a comedy seems to be the order of the season as it is generally a sure shot winner with the masses. However, lately there has been an overdose of mundane, blindly copied comedies, which barely have a sensible and logical plot.
Shaadi Se Pehle has been produced under Subhash Ghai’s banner Mukta Arts and is directed by Satish Kaushik. The stars of the film include Akshaye Khanna (Aashish Kapoor), Mallika Sherawat (Sania), Ayesha Takia (Rani), Sunil Shetty, Aftab Shivdasani, Anupam Kher, Gulshan Grover and Rajpal Yadav.
Aashish and Rani are in love with each other, but Rani’s family is totally against this relationship. There are a number of other problems too, Aashish suffers from hypertension and has to keep popping a pill to calm himself and his childhood friend, Rohit (Aftab) seems to be completely infatuated with Rani. Aashish consults a doctor (Boman Irani) about his medical dilemma and unfortunately misinterprets the doctor’s diagnosis. He thinks he has cancer. He now wants to do the right thing by Rani, he knows that she truly loves him and will not leave him even if she learns of his supposed prognosis. He comes up with a plan and carries it out with the help of his friend Rajpal Yadav. He decides to hook up with a sexy supermodel, so that Rani will be dejected by his two timing and dump him.
He flirts around with supermodel, Sania (Mallika) and flaunts her around for Rani to get the news. On seeing the two of them together Rani is heartbroken and leaves Aashish. However, there’s a new twist to the story now, Ashish is not going to die of cancer, and in fact, he does not even have cancer. Well now that he’s not sick and not dying, the man no longer wants to sacrifice his love. Aashish wants Rani back. But that’s hardly going to be an easy feat. He has three problems on hand, first he has to convince Rani that he did not cheat on her, second he has to break off her engagement with Rohit and third he has to convince Anna (Suniel Shetty) a goon who is Sania’s brother and wants them to tie the knot as soon as possible to relent.
Will Ashish manage all these three tasks, will Rani forgive and forget, will Rohit let go and will Anna relent. The plot and concept seems to be quite interesting, it does not merely seem to have no sensible story line at all. Unfortunately, Shaadi Se Pehle does not manage to capitalize on this and does not manage to live up to expectations.
Shaadi Se Pehle does not spontaneously evoke laughter in the audiences. One suddenly tends to remember this is a comedy and brings up the occasional smile or laugh. Somehow, many of the hilarious situations turn out to be irritatingly forced. The natural comic element and comic timing seems to be missing from the film or can be viewed only in parts. There also seem to be too many sub plots in the film, which only serve to confuse audiences. Garish, loud and chaotic scenes don’t make a comedy. The second half of the film takes it downhill and the climax does not manage to even capture the viewers’ attention.
Shaadi Se Pehle has a decent storyline, which could have been given optimum mileage, but the director Satish Kaushik who is also a comedian actor himself has not managed to do justice to Saadi Se Pehle. In places, one manages to get a good laugh and watch good humorous moments like the part where Akshaye conveys to his friend, Rajpal that he is going to die. Also, the misinterpretation between doctor and patient is a fun sequence. The direction by Satish Kaushik is average but he does not deliver with a punch. The cinematography, which depicts Malaysian locales, is good. Music composer Reshammiya does not come up with a super hit album, but the music is passable. The witty one-liners are fairly nice and at least put a smile on your face.
Akshaye Khanna has perfected his comic routine and timing very well after doing plenty of comedy films. He carries forth his character with complete ease. Mallika Sherawat gets to portray a character, that of a seductress, which is extremely apt for her. She is fair in her portrayal of the character and manages to also evoke a few laughs. Ayesha Takia is the bore of the film, and she does not manage to infect any of that bubbly charm she once exuded. She needs to losen up a bit in front of the camera.
Suniel Shetty merely plays one of those character roles that everyone has got used to seeing him do, he does not manage to make an impression and Aftab Shivdasani too seems to be thrashing around yet again. Anupam Kher is not his hundred percent comic self, Gulshan Grover is merely included to serve as a distraction and Rajpal Yadav is over the top but still fun to watch
Shaadi Se Pehle is fun at times, but definitely does not live up to expectations of being an outright comedy. A time pass film, considering it’s the only light comic film releasing this week; it may do fairly okay at the box office. But don’t have tremendous expectations.
