Saawan - Movie Review

This is the second love story that is releasing this week, but parallel to this love story track there is another track, which deals with destiny and fate. Salman Khan in his new get up, complete with unkempt hair and blue contacts is no doubt the superstar of the film and also its USP. The film is about how some people in life are gifted with unexplainable talents. One such talent is being able to read the future. Predicting someone’s destiny can be a boon as well as a bane. The concept sounds novel and interesting for a bollywood film, but the execution and screenplay is a different matter altogether.

Saawan Kumar’s film Saawan - The Love Season stars Salman Khan, Kapil Jhaveri (Raj), Saloni Aswani (Kajal), Prem Chopra, Ranjeet, Bobby Darling, Jhonny Lever and Kiran Rathod. This film produced by Saawan Kumar marks his comeback of sorts, after quite a while. Saawan has churned out quite a few hits in the 70’s & 80’s.

Raj and Kajal are both from Mumbai and they happen to meet each other while on holiday in Cape Town. Raj immediately falls in love with Saloni, its love at first sight for him. However, Kajal is not convinced. So Raj woos her in the traditional manner and finally both are happy. Each of them confides in their father about this relationship. The two fathers’ meet up and realize that they are childhood friends. Now everyone is happy and an engagement date, which is also Kajal’s birthday, is fixed for the two lovers.

All is going well until Kajal bumps into a strange man (Salman Khan); he saves her from meeting with an accident. He also warns Kaajal that her father will die at 9 pm on that same night. The mysterious man’s prediction comes true; her father dies that same night at 9 pm sharp. Kajal now wants to meet this mysterious man who can predict the future, as she wants to know her own future. She meets up with him and he tells her some devastating news.

The stranger tells her that she too will die within two days. Kajal is alarmed, but she doesn’t wish to spend any time wallowing in self-pity or crying about something she cannot change. She wants to live life to the fullest in the next two days, she wishes to live an entire lifetime in these two days. What happens next? Does Kaajal die? What happens to the mysterious man who can predict the future? What happens to the two lovers?

The plot does sound interesting and the storyline is intriguing. But as for the direction and execution of the film, it is far below expectations. There is not enough punch and conviction in the screenplay of the film. Where the story could have been enhanced and developed, the film has just merely fallen flat. Director Saawan Kumar seems to be stuck in a bygone era for making movies, the style and feel has no appeal for today’s times and generation. The movie is not dramatic enough. The director seems to be of the view that a love story along with a few exotic locations can make a movie a hit. But this out dated formula does not work for this film.

Though a new twist is introduced in the climax, that alone does not manage to save the film. The age-old formula of using songs after every two dialogues seems to grate on one’s nerves. And even during the time of crisis, the couple seems to be dancing and singing around in foreign locations. The cinematography is definitely a breather and relief where one gets to see the locales of Sun City and Dubai. Music by Aadesh Srivastava is also a downpour, with tacky lyrics at times. Salman Khan’s look for a person who can foresee the future is definitely not believable. His performance is average but styling is terrible. Kapil’s role does not give him too much scope and Saloni is quite capable in her part. The comic relief provided by Johnny Lever and Bobby Darling is not only unnecessary but is completely forced. Prem Chopra and Ranjeet play roles of convenience.

Saawan - The Love Season is a terrible disappointment for viewers who expected a solid story with lots of drama from this talented director. The film may go down well in the metros and other single theaters due to the presence of super star Salman Khan. Hopefully Salman will be able to predict the fate of this film at the box-office.
