Risk is a cops and gangsters action packed film which delves into the life of Inspector Suryakant, an encounter specialist, the trials and travails that he goes through, the loopholes in the police force and the system in general. The film belongs to the action genre and hence has a lot of violence, blood and gore. The genre has been explored time and again, especially by Ramgopal Varma in his films Company, Satya and Shiva. The script has nothing new and novel to offer although the screenplay is average and the execution is adequately attempted. It has the cops chasing the gangsters, then getting into trouble, some corrupt politicians thrown for good measure and finally the cop being forced into taking the law into his own hands. The film has a stale topic as its premise, too much of violence and is purely action based which may not attract a lot of viewers. Vishram Sawant’s execution is average and tries to uplift the lacklustre script. Also the performances by Randeep Hooda and Vinod Khanna are good. However overall Risk is just an average film as only select viewers will enjoy this action genre, it has uninspiring script but still an able execution.
Risk, an action packed drama has been directed by Vishram Sawant and stars Vinod Khanna as Khalid, Randeep Hooda as Suryakant Satam, Tanushree Datta as Shraddha, Seema Biswas as Devki Vardhan, Yashpal Sharma as Arbaaz, Makrand Deshpande as Hari, Zakir Hussain as Naidu etc
Suryakant (Randeep Hooda) is an upright cop with honest intentions but he doesn’t mind pulling the trigger to eradicate crime and the criminals. Khalid is a don who has a gang in Mumbai but operates from Bangkok and his arch rival is Naidu (Zakir Hussain). Politician Sarang is the underhand corrupt politician who is hand in gloves with these gangsters. Suryakant is posing as a threat as he gets closer to these gangsters, he guns down many of Khalid’s aides and is gradually and unknowingly helping Khalid’s rival Naidu. But when Suryakant tries to eliminate a trusted aide Devki Vardhan from Khalid’s gang, Khalid gets back at him by getting him into trouble with the very system that he is a part of.
Suryakant is put behind bars and he is forced back by a greedy and corrupt system. He has no choice but to fight back using the same lies, greed and underhand ways that the underworld uses to survive. He plays the games of the underworld and tires to get back his life and lost power. He is out for blood and will eliminate all in his part to eradicate crime and the criminals.
Vishram Sawant has given his character of Suryakant Satam a real life picturisation based on real-life encounter specialist Daya Nayak. Even Vinod Khanna’s character has been portrayed well. There are some good moments in the film like the touching humane side to the gangster when he is tending to his mentally ill child. Vishram even attempts to throw in some twists and turns at several junctures. The director also tries to explore the setbacks within our system and does so with conviction and credibility. Vishram Sawant’s execution and screenplay are quite able and apt in this action based drama.
However there are also quite a few setbacks, like the excessive violence which will definitely not go down well with family audiences, so it caters to a select audience. Also the premise of cops and gangsters and breaking laws for a greater good is an old, oft repeated and tried technique in Bollywood to expose the corrupt system. Also in terms of action, several cinematic liberties have been taken where the cop just shoots or guns down important ministers and criminals with no hindrance.
Nonetheless Risk does manage to catch your attention with its sincerity and even its style of storytelling which is realistic and simplistic. There is hardly any music in the film as it does not have any scope for too many songs, the two songs ‘Hitchki’is strictly average but does have the required masala as an item number and the other song is nothing to rave about. The background music does have the required impact on the storyline. Cinematography by Mahesh Muthuswamy is fine and suit’s the mood and feel of the film. Performances by the leads are quite good too.
Randeep Hooda’s look is stern and in keeping with the image of a tough cop. His performance too is relatively good and he portrays the encounter specialist with poise and ease. Vinod Khanna makes a comeback in a negative role and gives a commendable performance as the villain. Tanushree Datta barely gets any scope in the film, Seema Biswas too is not given enough space and the others are average in their performances.
Risk is interesting in just a few parts but in its entirety it has a very dull script which is the major setback and the execution tries to uplift the script but barely manages to do so. Overall the film barely makes it to the average mark and can be viewed for merely the performances by Hooda and Khanna.
