Slapstick comedy, witty dialogues, hilarious expressions and a stylish glossy look is what Partner has to offer. Partner is an above average comedy that manages to make you laugh with various sequences between the two male leads. However what goes against it, are the various unrequired scenes and tracks that despite its attempt at comedy are unable to draw a laugh, but instead makes you cringe. The film has been inspired from Hollywood flick ‘Hitch’. What works for the film though is the unique chemistry between the two male leads Salman and Govinda, whenever they are on-screen together they eventually manage to elicit a laugh. Salman’s smart lines compliment Govinda’s nerdy act. However some of the remaining tracks are not up to the mark. Moreover the film could have done away with several pointless tracks and been better edited. On the whole though the film is worth a watch as it is a time-pass comic caper with the two heroes making it an above average comic flick.
The film has been produced by Sohail Khan and directed by David Dhawan. The dialogue and lyrics have been written by Sanjay Chhel. The film stars Salman as Prem, Govinda as Bhaskar, Katrina as Priya and Lara as Naina. The music for the film has been composed by Sajid-Wajid with composer Wajid making his debut as Salman’s voice in a few songs.
Prem is gifted with a unique ability right from the time that he is born and having been around seven sisters for siblings only makes his gift even more powerful over the years. Prem has an uncanny gift of being able to know what women want and using this gift he eventually becomes a ‘love guru’. As a love guru, Prem helps guys to woo the women they love. One day a client called Bhaskar Diwakar Chaudhary comes to Prem for help to woo the woman he has fallen head over heels in love with. The problem however is that Bhaskar is a simple bloke and comes across as stupid and silly. Even Prem feels that it is impossible for stupid Bhaskar to win the heart of the pretty and rich Priya.
Nonetheless Bhaskar pursues Prem till he agrees to help him win the affections of Priya. Meanwhile Prem himself falls head over heels for Naina, a reporter who seems to always have a knack of getting into trouble. But Naina is not interested in falling in love as she has other priorities in her life and does not succumb to Prem’s charms despite his various attempts to woo her. So while Prem teaches Bhaskar the tricks too woo Priya, he himself also tries to woo his ladylove. The hiccups come in the form of Priya’s rich father who disagrees, a single mother with a son, an expose on love-guru and his new protégée etc. So will the two couples finally come together despite the hitches?
David Dhawan is known as the master of comedy and with this film too he depicts great chemistry and comic timing between his two actors Salman and Govinda. There are some truly comic scenes between the two like when Prem gives him advice to go into the boardroom, Govinda is a laugh riot in the boardroom with his funny accented English, the scene where Govinda is so happy that he has got a date with Priya and he begins to cry and blow his nose, the scene where Salman teaches Govinda to dance gracefully and several others. Govinda’s nerdy but endearing acts like the gay act towards the latter part are truly funny and they compliment Salman’s cool-dude attitude. The dialogues are often smart, witty and even rhyming which at times is quite funny. David Dawn’s execution of the film seems to be done with complete flair for the light-hearted comedy and humour that comes across on-screen.
However there are a few down falls in the screenplay, certain tracks like the one where a rocket seems to be going after Salman whilst he is on a jet ski in the water actually seems extremely irrelevant, juvenile and unwanted. Perhaps the director was keen on incorporating a little more animation even though it appeared forced into the track. Lara’s tryst with the chhota don (Rajpal Yadav) and his subsequent comic act could have been completely edited and was anything but funny. Also several times it seems that the movie was about to end, like when all the couples come together in ‘Duppatta Nau Rang Da’ song, but then a new track was incorporated and even the end bit about the honeymoon was crude and tasteless.
The look of the film and cinematography is stylish and glossy with loads of vibrant colours, phirang chicks and beautiful beaches. The music is youthful, energetic and fun ‘Do You Wanna Partner’; ‘My Love’ etc are complete masala numbers and entertaining too. Both Govinda and Salman match each other step for step despite their distinct styles of dancing. The styling of all actors and actresses by Alvirah Agnihotri is top notch and they look sexy, stylish and cool.
Performances too are good with Salman looking awesome, delivering his witty lines with ease and matching Govinda’s comic time with ease. Govinda too gives an awesome performance with his superb comic timing, he delivers his funny lines with a natural comic talent and his expressions make one roar with laughter. The girls look very pretty but do not have any scenes where they can display their comic skills. Nonetheless both Katrina and Lara manage to give an adept performance. The little boy Rohan also delivers a decent performance. The other characters are suitable for their roles.
Overall Partner is an above average comedy flick that is a time-pass entertainer. At the box-office it should have a good turn-out. Partner may not have an original script and flawless screenplay but performances and chemistry between Govinda and Salman is what makes the film an amusing comic caper.
