Mumbai Meri Jaan - Movie Review

Mumbai Meri JaanSome films do not require any judgment. They are above ranking category. The films that touched the nerve of the audience are best in all regards. They are supreme in all dimensions. A hard core subject does not require superstars and extra masala as it would strike the mind of the audience the moment it unveils. Nishikant Kamat’s Mumbai Meri Jaan falls in this criteria. It speaks reality and as we all know reality does not require any mask to make to the chartbusters, Mumbai Meri Jaan stands high in this regard.

The film sends a straightforward and a very clear message. It unfolds the Mumbai train blasts incident of July 11 2006. It talks about the aftermath of the tragic incident and the pain of the protagonists; it shows the different analytics and upholds the depressed mood of the people. This unfortunate event had shaken the lives of many and director Nishikant Kamat tries to lift up that heartbroken incident. His troupe Soha Ali Khan, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan, Paresh Rawal and R Madhavan have enacted different character with utter perfection.

The characters of the film goes like, Soha Ali Khan as Rupali, she plays the role of a TV journalist who sell news by making it crispy. The Mumbai train blasts had seriously affected her. Suresh (Kay Kay Menon) is a Hindu fanatic. He sees minority community in a bad eye. Tukaram Patil (Paresh Rawal) is a senior constable who is at the verge of retirement and enjoys his duty with his partner Sunil Kadam (Vijay Maurya) who is a young blood and always ready to fight back against injustice and corruption.  R. Madhavan, as Nikhil Agarwal is an IT professional. He luckily escapes the blast but could not get out of the trauma and dies every now and then within himself. Irrfan Khan, as Thomas is a roadside coffee vendor who carries his own perception in this contemporary society.

It shows how an unfortunate incident can changed the lifestyle, attitude and mindset of a personality. How the protagonists struggle days and nights to throw the incident to a dark corner and lead a normal life. It speaks about the pain and agony of the family that is affected by the ill-fated incident. The film has so many toughing incidents that at times it will raise your goosebumps. It will touch your emotional nerve and shake your feelings.

Speaking about the performances, Soha Ali Khan is top-notch. With every passing film, she is improvising her acting. She has depicted the emotional scene in hospital with utter perfection. Paresh Rawal again proved that he is a complete actor. Irrfan Khan’s expression is first-rate. Kay Kay Menon is at his best. Vijay Maurya is remarkably good. Madhavan is superlative. Yogesh Joshi has penned touching dialogues.

Nishikant Kamat’s debut Marathi film Dombivili Fast has catapult many limelight and his second offering is also expected to do some good business but not too promising as it is devoid of song and dance and would not lure the audience who is habituated to the masala quotient. But whatsoever, films like Mumbai Meri Jaan will always stand high.
