Katputtli - Movie Review

Katputtli has been produced by the brother-sister duo Mink and Punnu under their banner Bro & Sis productions and has been directed by Sanjay Khanna. The film is a psychological thriller and unfortunately is below average and a complete disappointment. The subject which deals with the protagonist losing her memory and found in an overwhelming state is not a novel theme in bollywood and has been unsuccessfully attempted in several other bollywood films. Even the execution seems to be given the treatment of a B-grade Hindi film and the performances too manage to fall flat.

The story has been written by Punnu Brar and stars Milind Soman, Mink Brar, Sameer Dharamadikari, Yukta Mookhey, Seema Biswas in the lead roles and Aseem Merchant in a special appearance. The music for the film has been done by Bappi-Tutul, Punnu Brar and Ishq Bector. There are several other actors who have done special appearances or character roles in the film. Katputtli means the life of a puppet as the protagonist’s memory is suddenly wiped out and she is found in a traumatic state, hence she is forced to rely on others to piece together her shattered life.

Lisa Oberoi (Mink) is found in a traumatic state, she does not remember the past, her family or her life. She is walking on the streets with blood on her clothes and wads of cash in her pockets. This is her first realisation, but neither does she remember who she is or where she comes from. Her husband Arjun (Milind) finds her in a hospital and ironically she is the owner of a chain of hospitals and her husband is a reputed surgeon. Lisa learns that she had a good life, a beautiful home, a strong marriage and a rich luxurious life. She is the heir of some of the best hospitals in the city. Arjun makes several unsuccessful attempts to revive her memory. She returns home and tries to rebuild her life once more, everything seems to be fine on the surface but Lisa’s mind is plagued by doubt and no matter how much she tries she cannot bury the questions that arise in her mind. The most important question that keeps niggling at her is if her life was so wonderful why was she found in that terrible condition, what led to that event?

Lisa keeps getting these flashbacks of blood all over and the cash that was found on her, but no matter how much she tries to silence the demons she cannot. She tries to find answers from Arjun but he too seems clueless. Lisa begins to doubt even her husband and his intentions and whether the presence of their pretty neighbour Anju (Yukta) and the nurse Celina hired by Arjun is a deliberate attempt to keep a watch on her. At this point of her life, Dev (Sameer), a naval officer enters into her life. Dev has been her friend since college days and is Anju’s husband. On seeing his best friend’s life shattered he resolves to find the truth. Lisa slowly uncovers the truth piece by piece.

First and foremost the genre of the movie which is a psychological thriller is not at all appealing to a large section of the masses. The execution by Sanjay Khanna does absolutely nothing to lift the film and often the portrayal of certain portions appears downright sleazy. Even the dramatic moments seem over the top and the suspense element does not manage to hold your attention. The climax too is downright predictable and a disappointment. There has been very little promotion or pre-release hype for this low budget film. Unfortunately even the actors’ performances can be rated below average. Mink in her debut film is over dramatic and does not seem to depict the character’s confusion and bewilderment convincingly. Her dialogue delivery and also her expressions are disappointing. Milind Soman seems too wooden in his role as the husband and does not make much of a mark. Yukta Mookhey‘s sense of style is over the top and her performance leaves a lot to be desired. Sameer is just about average in his performance.

The film is a total washout and even the openings at theaters have been very poor. Katputtli lacks substance, style and performances and hence at the box-office it will pass by unnoticed.
