I See You - Movie Review

I See You is Arjun Rampal’s first tryst with production hence he has chosen a romantic film, but he tries to make it different by making it a romantic comedy with a fantasy element. The film revolves around a young man Raj who is the only person who is able to see this beautiful girl Shivani who is in between life and death at this point and hence he is the only person who can help her with her problem. The film of course caters to a niche audience who is open to different cinema, with its very concept. The film is also partly inspired from a Hollywood flick on similar lines but has tried to adapt to Indian audiences taste. However apart from the romantic comedy angle, the film tries to add some masala by incorporating a track which involves a crime aspect of organ transplanting. Though the concept is novel for Hindi cinema, the script and screenplay are weak and lackluster. There are a few sweet and funny moments in the film but the overall picture is not captivating and engrossing enough. I See You is perhaps a time-pass film and needs to be watched with no expectations.

I See You has been directed by Vivek Agrawal and stars Arjun Rampal as Casanova Raj Jaiswal, newcomer Vipasha as Doctor Shivani, Chunkey Pandey, Boman Irani, Kirron Kher, Sonali Kulkarni etc. The music has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar and the film has been shot in London.

Raj Jaiswal (Arjun) is the charming Casanova anchor of a popular television show called ‘British Raj’. He charms all the ladies and has a way with women. But suddenly his life changes because of this one woman who comes into his life. Shivani is a young doctor who is currently in a coma after a mysterious accident. She is in between life and death and her spirit is roaming around freely trying to find a dilemma to her problem. She is invisible to all except the charming Raj and she now has to convince him to help her out. Raj is confused at first by this woman whom only he can see but gradually he falls for her innocent charm and is willing to help her.

Akshay (Chunkey) is Raj’s best friend and he is worried about Raj and his obsession about an invisible woman, so he seeks the help of a shrink (Boman Irani). Meanwhile Raj discovers that Shivani is lying in a coma due to a set up which was made to look like an accident and he unearths a deep scam where Shivani was made the target. Will Shivani come out of the coma; will she and Raj ever have a normal relationship?

I See You has some good moments; it has a number of light moments which manage to bring out laughter like Arjun being desperately pursued by Shivani, Chunkey Pandey’s antics, Boman Irani the shrink’s analysis etc. Even the romantic scenes between Arjun and Vipasha have warmth and are fairly adequately handled by director Vivek Agrawal. Moreover the look and style of the film has a very international and modern day appeal. Even the end although a bit unrealistic leaves you with a nice content feeling. The cameos by SRK and Hrithik Roshan lend a bit of a star touch to the film. The editing and length of the film too is kept in check and does not drag on.

However there are several things which also take the film on a downward spiral, firstly the script by Suresh Nair is not convincing enough and has way too many loopholes and secondly the screenplay does not come across as convincing enough. There is no logical sequence to the events and agreed that with a story like this cinematic liberties are fine to a certain limit, but often sequences with no logical explanation are incorporated. Reasons as to why only Arjun can see Vipasha are not given, even some of Vipasha’s antics as the invisible spirit are over the top. In fact many lose ends have been left dangling and no explanations are given for the protagonist’s actions. The incorporation of the secret crime aspect is unnecessary and is a diversion. The climax too is predictable.

The music by Vishal-Shekhar is sweet and refreshing with some nice tracks like ‘Subah Subah’ being heard at the start. The picturisations of the songs add to the charm of the music. Ashok Mehta’s cinematography which captures some beautiful locales of London are note worthy and lend a unique touch to the film. Dialogues are witty at places, especially some of the comic dialogues. Performances are just about average in the film.

Arjun Ramal has the look and style to carry off the Casanova image and even his acting skills seem to have improved tremendously. His performance can be noted as an above average one. He carries some funny moments and some of the emotional moments well. Newcomer Vipasha does not look convincing as the invisible doctor and at times her character often lacks enthusiasm, she comes across as having potential but somehow it has not been tapped into in the film. Chunkey Pandey is good in a few scenes and delivers an average performance. Boman Irani could have had a meatier role but he too is average. Sonali Kullkarni and Kirron Kher are barely there.

On the whole I See You has a script that has several flaws and a screenplay that lacks spunk and enthusiasm. The novel concept too will not be appreciated by all audiences and the cast too does not boast of any big names except for the cameos. At the box-office unfortunately the niche concept may be responsible for a weak response. It is just a light time pass film which entertains in bits and pieces.
