I – Proud To Be An Indian - Movie Review

“I – Proud To Be An Indian” turns out to be the first film where Sohail Khan is not involved as a director. This time he hands over the directorial reins to debutante Puneet Sira and at the same time has come up with an all-new international cast. Pakistani based - UK settled actor 'Imran Ali Khan' plays Sohail's Pakistani friend in the film while for the bad man who plays a menacing whitehead in the film, Sohail has roped in the 6ft 4in British actor 'Tim Lawrence'. Even the leading lady who plays Sohail's love interest in the film is played by a Pakistani based - Canada settled actress 'Heena Tasleem'. The film budgeted at approx. 4.5 crores was shot in a 36 days start to finish schedule flat. Sohail does not carries a specific name in the film and throughout he is referred as 'I'.

Storyline

The film is about an Indian, I (Sohail Khan), who is forced to migrate to London with his father (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), to stay with his older brother (Asif Sheikh) and his family as they had migrated few years ago.

Once in London, I starts to discover, that the middle class Asian families are living a very frightened life, due to some local white outlaws, who are a pack of skinheads. The dreaded Cane (Tim Lawrence) who is 6ft 4in is the leader of the skinheads. Cane along with his cronies believes that their country England is being taken over by the Asian community. Cane represents this new bunch of so-called Neo Nazis who preaches racism. They hate any other skin color other than white. They feel that non-British has no right to stay in England, particularly the Asians.

I has to stand up for the Asians and fight for their rights. I beats up some of the skinheads and Cane comes to know about that. Cane sends more skinheads to retaliate and the problem becomes bigger.

Sargent Grant, a very strict officer does not approve of the existence of the skinheads and feels that they are a menace to the society. He orders Cane and his pack to stay away from the Indian boy. The skinheads are desperate to get I, but are helpless due to the warning of Sargent Grant.

Cane's evil mind comes to the conclusion as to who would hate the Indian boy as much as he does. He gets the answer in the name of a Pakistani boy Aslam (Imran Ali Khan) living in the same suburbs of East London. Cane thinks that Aslam being a Pakistani would definitely be useful in eliminating the Indian boy.

Aslam goes to make an attempt on I's life, but as fate would seem, it so turns out that they end up becoming best of friends. One of the prime reasons for them to become close friends was that in their confrontation, they realize that Cane was using the age-old British formula of divide and rule.

In the friendship, I even gets involved with Aslam's sister Noor (Heena Tasleem). After some moments of happiness between I, Noor and Aslam, the traumatic experience increases towards I's family. But I's patience reaches a saturation point when he hears about Aslam's murder by Cane.

Now, I challenges Cane to fight with him on his land, the streets of London. The fight is set. If Cane stands, the Asians will walk out of their land and if I stands tall, the skinheads would never come in the way of the Asian community.

Thus begins the climax in the form of the fight between I, who represents the sentiments and emotions of the Asians and Cane, who represents the so-called wicked liberators of England.

In the fight between the good and the evil, good always triumphs over the evil. Similarly in the nail biting fight, I triumphs over the evil Cane and makes all the Asians proud.

Music

The film has 6 tracks composed by musicians Daboo Malik and K.C.Loy. None of the tracks are lip-synced in the film; all are just used as background pieces. Moreover, the onscreen runtime of the songs won't be more than a minute or two, thereby not hindering the continuity and pace of the film.

Release

In accordance with the patriotic theme of the movie, it's slated to release on the Republic Day – January 26.
