Humko Deewana Kar Gaye - Movie Review

Love Stories are eternal, classic and always very popular with audiences. A good love story can touch the audience’s heart and make them yearn for more. However, a love story is sometimes also used due to lack of creativity by the scriptwriter and director. How a love story is executed and developed from print onto the screen by the director is also very important. A good love story most importantly needs to have the right amount of emotion and depth.

Humko Deewana Kar Gaye is a love story directed and written by Raj Kanwar. This love story stars Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Bipasha Basu, Anil Kapoor, Helen and Bhagyashree. The tag line of the movie goes as...One life…one moment…one coincidence…changed their lives…forever.

Aditya (Akshay Kumar) is an automobile engineer as well as a test driver for a successful car company. He is engaged to Sonia (Bipasha Basu) who is a fashion designer. But the two have completely opposite personalities and views on life. Akshay is a typical family man who will always prioritize family, while Basu is a modern girl with a modern outlook. She prioritizes her career and marriage and kids will always take a back seat. Although Akshay is always aware of their differences, he often tries to overlook these disparities.

The marriage date for Aditya and Sonia is fixed by their families, but both have to go on work related trips to different locations. Aditya has to go off to Canada to overlook a new car model development that will be launched in India soon and Sonia has to attend a fashion show in Paris that will help make a mark in her career. Both decide to keep their prior work commitments. In Canada, Aditya meets his sister, Simran’s (Bhagayshree) family. Unfortunately, he cannot live with them even though he would like to, as he has to stay at the company quarters because it is much nearer to the workshop. But he promises to come over for the weekends.

While in Canada, he keeps bumping into Jia (Katrina Kaif), who is the daughter of business tycoon Yashwardhan. Jia has come to Canada alone to do her wedding trousseau shopping as she is about to marry business magnate Karan Oberoi (Anil Kapoor). Jia is a simple sweet girl who longs to be loved, as she has received all the material comforts in life except for familial love. Both her father as well as her soon to be husband are too busy with their business pursuits to fulfill her needs. The chance encounters between Aditya and Jia keep happening and soon they develop a strong friendship and bond.

Aditya introduces Jia to his sister’s family and she finds the family that she has been looking for all her life. Gradually this affinity grows into love, but none of them are willing to admit it as they both are about to be engaged to other people. Fate of course intervenes and brings them together. After Aditya and Jia participate in a car race, they get snow stormed in the place and are forced to confront their feelings for each other. They spend a few intimate moments with each other. But tragedy strikes and the same fate that brought them together, now makes them part ways due to a misunderstanding between them and they each return to their fiancés. Will destiny once again come to the rescue of these two lovers who have parted ways? Will Aditya marry Sonia? Will Jia choose Aditya or Karan?

Nothing different about this love story, its a tried and tested formula that has been attempted several times. Many of the scenes attempt to capture the magic depicted in several Yash Raj films, but it seems to fall flat. Even several Hollywood film scenes have been attempted, but that too didn’t manage to make an impression and instead seemed to be an obvious rip-off. The film seems to be stretched out too long and even the climax, is painfully long drawn. The editing could have been much more crisp. After every few dialogues, there are songs, even when unnecessary for the situation. Anu Malik’s music has a few snazzy numbers, which are picturised quite well.

However, the film has a very fresh cast, the chemistry between the two leads, Katrina and Akshay is quite visible and even the look and feel of the film is glamorous with a lot of spunk. The cinematography that depicts the beautiful locations in Canada are striking and the sets are lavish and top notch. The film has a modern today’s feel and the setting and style are good, but the film falters when it comes to the script. The script is less than mediocre and neither does the screenplay manage to give it a boost.

Akshay Kumar as Aditya is fine in his acting but simply does not manage to move beyond and touch a chord of emotion amongst audiences. But nonetheless, he is able and apt in his performance. Katrina’s expressive beauty is definitely noticed and even her style is very elegant in the film. Her acting too has improved and she definitely makes a strong impression in this movie as Jia. Bipasha’s role is tiny but fair and Anil Kapoor is average too in his portrayal, but perhaps needs to concentrate on styling. Bhagayshree is adequate and Helen is barely there. The rest of the cast is able in their bits and pieces.

More emphasis has been given to the packaging and outer appeal of the film, while the script and storyline have been given secondary status. However due to the good promotion and fresh cast, the film may appeal initially, but perhaps there won’t be a long innings for this one. Strictly, a time pass film with a non-happening script.
