Heyy Babyy has a good dose of comedy, quite a bit of melodrama and a little baby who makes you smile. A bit of the film has been inspired from a Hollywood flick; however director Sajid Khan deserves credit for giving part of the film his own creative input. The comedy parts are definitely a laugh; however the melodrama and tears do get a bit too much after a while. The script and screenplay has a lot of wit and freshness. Sajid Khan’s execution too is definitely commendable, as he manages to keep his audiences entertained with a bit of comedy as well as drama. Performances by the three male leads, Akshay, Fardeen and Ritesh are top notch and also help in making the film above average.
The film which belongs to the comedy genre has been produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by Sajid Khan. It is comedian Sajid Khan’s directorial debut and it stars Akshay Kumar as Aroush, Fardeen Khan as Al, Ritesh Deshmukh as Tanmay, Vidya Balan as Esha, Boman Irani and a host of bollywood beauties like Malaika Arora, Amisha Patel, Dia Mirza, Riya Sen, Koena Mitra, Amrita Rao etc making a special appearance in a song. The music of the film has been composed by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy.
Aroush, Ali and Tanmay are three happy bachelors who live under the same roof as they all have one major passion/hobby. The three of them will chase anything in a skirt, they spend all their free time flirting with women and wooing them to their beds. However they all three seem to be allergic to commitment and love. Life is going by just fine until one day a little ‘Angel’ comes into their lives. However this Angel only seems to turn their happy lives upside down with her demands and wants. Angel is a little baby and her father is one of the three of them. They are just saddled with the responsibility of taking care of this little baby who has been left outside their doorstep. At first they hate this responsibility but then a twist in the story occurs and the little baby changes the three of them completely. They have got a new lease on life and have become better people because of Angel.
However just when things are going fine and the three of them are enjoying playing daddy to Angel, a new dramatic event occurs and the baby is simply snatched out of their lives. However neither of them is willing to let go of Angel and they will do just about anything to get her back. And so they plan and plot to get their Angel back.
Sajid Khan has used comic timing, witty one liners and funny expressions extremely well to bring on the laughs. The three actors trying to change diapers, make baby food and entertain a baby are simply hilarious. Even Sajid Khan’s script writing has creativity and the screenplay has a mixture of both comedy and melodrama. Sajid Khan’s execution is extremely competent as he tries to give the film a balanced dose of comedy, emotions, drama and loads of song and dance. The drama which includes the twist like where the mother of the child steps into the picture is captivating. The chemistry between the three heroes Akshay, Fardeen and Ritesh has been well explored and they also seem quite comfortable with the little baby. Another aspect that Sajid Khan seemed to portray well on-screen was his heroine’s honesty with her physical intimacy. Often Hindi cinema loves to portray the male conquests but shies away from showing the heroine getting physical before marriage. But here Sajid Khan makes it the integral part of the story and does not seem to have qualms about it.
However while the first half is filled with a balanced dose of comedy and emotions, yet the second half goes a bit overboard on the emotions. Also the melodrama where the child is critical does not come across as convincing. The child trying to be saved by the doctor looks extremely corny and seems to be playing too much on sensitive emotions. The relationship between Akshay and Vidya lacks chemistry as also the relationship with Vidya and the other two heroes just does not make a mark. Vidya, the mother and child’s relationship seems the most vague; there is no warmth or emotion in the scenes where the mother and daughter are shown together. Also on one hand the film caters to young kids but seemed to have several adult jokes which may not exactly go hand in hand.
Nonetheless despite these flaws, the film comes across as a masala comic caper that entertains as well as manages to touch emotions. The music too is peppy and most of the songs are refreshing. Mast Kalandhar with SRK making a special appearance only adds more zing. The cinematography which includes beautiful and colourful Australia locales is good. Dialogues are funny and witty at times. Performances are above average by most of the cast.
Akshay Kumar as the leader of the three once again stands out for his immense flair for comic timing. He delivers a good performance in the comedy scenes as well as the dramatic scenes. Fardeen Khan too seemed comfortable in his role and delivered his act convincingly. Ritesh Deshmukh’s funny expressions and again his comic timing are simply wonderful. Boman Irani had a small role but was extremely adept. Unfortunately though Vidya Balan did not make much of a mark. Her look didn’t really work and even her performance seemed extremely unenthusiastic. The rest of the cast suited their roles.
Heyy Babyy is an above average entertainer with a fare script, an entertaining screenplay and good performances. At the box-office the film will no doubt do well as it has a comic streak which is the flavour of the season. An above average entertainer.
