Guru - Movie Review
Mani Ratnam is known to make films that have deep and profound content. His next film ‘Guru’ has one of the hottest couples onscreen Ash-Abhi who are also rumoured to be dating each other off-screen too. Another reason that Guru is eagerly anticipated is that it is said to be based on the real life success story of one of the most skilled and foresighted men, the late Dhirubai Ambani. The film also stars Vidya Balan, R. Madhavan, Mithun Chakraborty and the music is composed by ace composer A.R Rehman and lyricist Gulzar.
Guru Kant Desai (Abhishek Bachchan) was the son of a humble headmaster who lived in a small village Idhar in Gujarat. His father always taught him that one must be satisfied and content with whatever life has given them and to not try and always seek the unattainable. But Guru believed in another ideology, he believed in dreaming big and attaining everything that he dreamed. He wanted to be big, bigger and the best. He believed in himself, he believed that nothing was impossible and that if one was determined to attain something and worked hard, he could get everything he wants in life. And Guru got everything he dreamt of.
Guru came to Bombay with all his dreams and aspirations, he was determined to make it in a world where being rich was only inherited from ancestors, he wanted to change this myth and prove that he could be a part of the rich not by inheriting anything but by achieving it all. And he achieved everything and used each and every means that was available to him to do so. In his journey from rags to riches he was accompanied by his steadfast and loyal companion Sujatha (Aishwarya Rai). At first Sujatha was reluctant to marry Guru, but eventually after learning him, she grew to love and respect him a lot. She became devoted to him.
Guru’s strength and determination was admired by many people who saw his drive and force. However there were also people who began to dislike Guru and the way he functioned and thought. Nanaji (Mithun) and Shyam Saxena (Madhavan) were two people who did not see things along the same lines as Guru did. When Nanaji first met Guru he too was enamored by Guru’s fire and determination to achieve the impossible. Nanaji truly believed that Guru was the ‘golden lad’ and never believed that his golden boy could ever fall from grace. Nanaji also ran a newspaper called Swathantra. Unfortunately one fine day he learned some terrible truths about his golden boy and he was devastated, but Nanaji wanted everyone else to know the truth about the ‘golden boy’ and he was going to make sure that everyone learned the truth even if it would destroy Guru forever and irrelevant of the fact that he too could be destroyed.
Shyam Saxena too saw through the farce that Guru had created around himself. Shyam was never impressed by Guru’s countless antics and strategies and always believed that he was too good to be true. Shyam too wanted to expose the devious and underhand ways that Guru resorted to achieve power and richness. However Meenu (Vidya Balan), a physically impaired girl believed in Guru, she believed that he was a force to reckon with. However Meenu could also see what others could not see about Guru, she saw a man determined to make it to the top and unfortunately there were many aspects which hindered his part and tried to halt him, but through his sheer determination he swept away all the obstacles in his path and plowed ahead.
Guru was a man who thought big and acted quickly and wisely to gain what he wanted. Guru was also a visionary who was able to foresee what others realized only later and this was his biggest strength. Guru first began his extremely small establishment ‘Shakti Trading’ in just a small room with a few tables and chairs. But with his vision and determination he went on to make his company one of the largest Indian companies and one that was the first to make it to the Forbes Top 500 companies in just 40 years. And he achieved all this through his philosophy “Think big, think ahead and think fast.”
The film is all set for a release on January 12, 2007.
