Garam Masala - Movie Review

Garam Masala… well… ummmm… yes… like… ummmm… yeah… well… right… Garam Masala… hmmmmm… ummmm…

Keep guessing! What for? Well, for a plain reason – what is it all about? Well, lets try…

Mac [Akshay Kumar] and Sam [John Abraham] are two amateur photographers working for a magazine. Forced to share an apartment, they live together despite of their differences and loathsome attitude towards each other. One smart move and Sam strips Mak of all - his designation, his flat, his car and even the girl he’s trying to woo. Sam leaves on a one-month trip to the US, much to Mak’s envy. But Mak too is sly, he decides to settle his score with Sam. Mak makes a team of allies, who decide to aid him for reasons as ‘straight’ as fresh cash to ‘Daaru-shaaru’. Mak gears up. This time loaded with a posh multi bedroom apartment, a fleet of luxury cars, and three gorgeous airhostess girlfriends!!! Mak successfully manages to trap all the three belles and makes them fall in love with him, withstanding the fact that his fiance’ Anjali [Rimii] is still waiting for him. His love life follows a schedule that he has planned in line with the flight timings of the three airhostesses. Soon, to handle and manage the chaos, Mak hires Mambo [Paresh Rawal] – an eccentric chef. Life seems bliss, but it doesn’t take long and the bliss becomes a mess. Reason – Sam. Enters Sam, and thus begins the chaos.

The film is remake of Priyadarshan’s ‘Boeing Boeing’, which again is remake of another Hollywood film with the same title. As far as the plot is considered, there is no rich story to pull off a full feature length film. Thin story line breeds bad screenplay. The set up of the film consumes much time, and what makes it worse is the fact that as the movie rolls further, one realizes that the set up and the plot further really do not complement. The writer could have made the screenplay much crisper and sharper, especially when the aim was to make a comedy.

Again, ‘Garam Masala’ is more of a slapstick comedy than a witty and humour filled flick. The film definitely has its moments, but a comedy film needs more than stupid gags. Technically, Priyadarshan repeats his team. Cinematography and editing are neat and appropriate. The editors deserve a clean chit and cannot be blamed for the pace of the film, when the screenplay is something that is flawed.

Dialogues by Neeraj Vora elevate the mood of the film. Music is by Pritam. The songs ‘Ada’ and ‘Dil Samunder’ rock. ‘Falak Dekhun…’ is another interesting number.

‘Garam Masala’… well, it belongs to ‘Khiladi no.1’ Akshay kumar. The actor has definitely come a long way since he started. He’s the saving grace of the film. Every single gesture makes you believe that he’s Mak. His comic timing is getting sharper with every single film. Kudos to the star! Well, if kudos to Akshay, than cheers to the pack of three new comers – Daisy, Nargis, & Neetu. For they surely know the ‘a’ of acting. If the three new comers give you a pleasant surprise, there is disappointment as well. Well, Johnny boy needs to work hard. Comedy asks for more than good looks, but the way the hard working stud has delivered power packed performances so far, it wont be a task. Paresh Rawal was his usual self, the pepper of ‘Garam Masala’. Rimii Sen was in the film, whatever she did, she did it sincerely, that is all for her!

‘Garam Masala’ is blend. It leaves you in peals of laughter but not through out the entire marathon length of the film. The film certainly lacks the rib tickling roller coaster ride that ‘Hera Pheri’ offered. A ‘Hera Pheri’ can never be repeated but certainly attempted. Priydarshanji, hope you are listening.

A final note to the filmmaker: Sir, you have contributed good films across genres to Indian cinema. We trust you, and your sensibilities. But…

Garam Masala… well… ummmm… yes… like… ummmm… yeah… well… right… Garam Masala… hmmmmm… ummmm…
