Fight Club - Movie Review

Fight Club, the very name of the movie has been borrowed from the Hollywood film with the same title. Glossy, slick and a young cast are the characteristics of this young and hip flick. Fight Club directed by Vikram Chopra has a fresh and young cast consisting of Zayed Khan (Vicky), Dino Morea (Karan), Ritiesh Deshmukh (Somil), Aashish Chowdhry (Diku), Dia Mirza (Anu) and Amrita Arora (Shonali). It also has Sohail Khan, Neha Dhupia, Suniel Shetty, Yash Tonk and Rahul Dev, indeed an impressive cast.

Fight Club is the story of four friends, their loves, their lives and their fights. Vicky, Karan, Somil and Diku share an amazing camaraderie with each other; they are more like brothers and always stand by each other through thick and thin. They keep getting involved in different situations, some romantic, some funny and some very serious, but they always remain united and see each other through these times.

The story turns a corner when Vicky stumbles upon a novel idea of a Fight Club. It is a club where people fight without any hindrances and settle their scores in an atmosphere charged with action and excitement. In the interim, a love story unfolds and Anu and Shonali become a part of the group. The four friends go off to Delhi to look into the affairs of a nightclub called Crossroads. This club has been at the receiving end of the ire of a few gang lords.

Things take a turn for the worse, when one of the gang lords, Anna’s (Suniel Shetty) brother Mohit (Yash Tonk) is killed. Now Anna wants to avenge his bother’s death. Dinesh (Ashmit Patel) a notorious and merciless gangster hatches a plot to eliminate his enemies with the help of his brother Sandy (Rahul Dev). As the battle lines are drawn, the four buddies call for the help of their ace trump card, bouncer Sameer to tilt the balance in their favour. Sameer helps the boys and finds love in the arms of Komal (Neha Dhupia). Will the team Fight Club win their battles, will they survive?

Fight Club is a typical Hindi potboiler, with romance, action and dance. A typical masala film that has everything. It has good action sequences, a little bit of humour, and there are few songs, which are foot-tapping numbers. There is loads of glamour, gloss and glitter. The execution of some scenes are brilliant. The film has a polished look and feel to it.

However even though visually and technically the movie has style, its basic foundation which is the plot is not strong enough. The core of the story does not reach the audience, as there is no basic plot. There are too many characters in the film and hence no one in particular is able to make a mark. The basic premise of starting a Fight Club with no apparent aim or goal sounds quite unrealistic. The director tries to substitute content with form and outer appeal.

The music is fair, sometimes it seems nice and sometimes it is merely used as fillers. The cinematography is good. Zayed Khan is charming enough, Ritiesh Deshmukh looks out of place, Aashish Chowdhry goes over the top, Dino Morea seems to be improving with each film, and Sohail Khan seems to be repetitive in his choice of roles. As for the girls, none of them seems to have any substantial role, but they look good.

Fight Club could have been an interesting movie, if it had a reasonable plot, some interesting twists and turns to keep the viewers mind occupied. However, it has lots of oomph and style but not much substance. It is an average time pass movie, with a half baked plot.
