Ek Chalis Ki Last Local (ECKLL) has a contemporary urban based theme which caters more to the multiplex crowd. The film deals with incidents in two individual’s lives after they miss the last local train for the night. The script and story is different as it deals with an irregular theme and the screenplay and execution of the film too is plausible and effective which makes it an above average different fare to watch. The film deals with the dark and secret happenings that take place at night when the goons come out to play, however it is not a dark or typical gangster film. In fact debutant director Sanjay Khanduri with his fine execution gives the film the effect of a believable spoof with interesting twists and turns to entertain the audiences. An unusual above average and interesting film which entertains and keeps you guessing till the end.
ECKLL has been directed by debutant Sanjay Khanduri and the story too has been written by him. The film stars Abhay Deol, Neha Dhupia and a number or theater actors. The film belongs to the comedy genre and the tagline of the film is ‘Dhai Ghante mein Dhai Crore.’
Nilesh (Abhay Deol) is a call center employee and unfortunately misses the last local at 1.40am. Chance makes him bump into another individual Madhu (Neha) who has also missed the last train for the night. To add to their woes there is an auto strike, so the two befriend each other and decide to walk to their destination which is quite a distance. En route the two stop at a bar and their chance meetings with various shady and underhand characters make them part of an interesting plot.
Abhay begins it all with a seemingly innocent gambling game going on at the bar, from there one thing leads to another and a crazy maze of events follows. The events envelope both Nilesh and Madhu into the thick of things and brings them in contact with characters they otherwise never ever would have come across in their daily life. At the end of it all there is also a pot of money waiting, so who will get to keep it?
The script though a flight of fantasy is witty, interesting and captivating. With each passing encounter of the protagonists, director Sanjay Khanduri manages to convince the audiences that such a weird turn events could happen. Khanduri’s execution makes it believable. He is uses a lot of subtle humour and dry wit and he gives his characters interesting colours and backgrounds. The screenplay unfolds in a dramatic manner and the twists and turns keep you guessing till the end. It is a witty and interesting film.
Unfortunately though what sets it back is its urbanized theme, it’s an unconventional story and put forth in an unconventional manner too which may not engross everyone. Also the editing could have been crisper and certain scenes make the film lengthy and don’t even add value to the film.
However director Sanjay Khanduri has used his creativity and imagination liberally while directing the film. The climax too is worthy of applause. It is this unconventional story and manner which manages to draw the audience’s attention. The background music of the film is average, the cinematography is consistent and the dialogues are witty. Performances too are unique and the actors play out their characters well. Abhay Deol as the goofy regular guy is likeable and his performance is endearing and entertaining. Neha Dhupia is competent and carries out her part well. The rest of the supporting cast too are extremely competent and help in taking the film higher.
ECKLL is more for the multiplex audiences; it has an unusual story and a distinctive screenplay. Khanduri’s attention grabbing execution, the various concoctions of characters and the astute twists and turns make the film above average and a unique experience to watch. At the box-office it should have a fare collection.
