Dhol - Movie Review

Madcap loud comedy, a script which belies logic or rationality and a screenplay that often goes over the top with its gags and humour is what Dhol consists of. Dhol is a typical Priyadarshan remake of a south film. However this time round, Priyan tries to incorporate an element of a thriller, unfortunately this fails completely and instead just takes the graph of the film lower. Also Priyan’s comedies have become fairly predictable, loud jokes, chaos, umpteen characters, double meaning dialogues etc have been done to death and its impact is no longer entertaining. Moreover Dhol has no rational script, the screenplay is just about average and the execution is not quite up to the mark. The film has just a few funny scenes which would arouse genuine laughter in the audiences, the rest is forced and the film comes across as just about average.

The film has been directed by Priyadarshan and the screenplay has been done by Manisha Korde. Dhol stars Tusshar Kapoor, Rajpal Yadav, Sharman Joshi and Kunal Khemu, Tanushree Dutta, Payal Rohatgi etc. The music of the film has been composed by Pritam.

The four boys are an unemployed good for nothing lot with big dreams and aspirations. But none of them are willing to work hard to make it big. Every time they attempt to do some work, they invariable get it all wrong and end up causing more problems. Finally they decide that the best way to get rich quickly would be to marry a rich girl. And they get the chance when the beautiful Tanushree comes to stay in their neighbourhood with her grandparents. Each of them tries to woo her and get her grandparent’s approval, but all their attempts only get them into more problems.

However things take a turn when the four boys learn a new treasured secret. They come with a plan. But trouble seems to be just behind the boys when they encounter dead bodies, goons etc. There’s also the mystery of the missing dhol which has a hidden treasure.

Director Priyadarshan uses his tried and tested formula of loud over the top comedy which many of his fans find entertaining. The film also focuses mostly on the four boys and their antics and using an all guys ensemble seems to be the latest trend with bollywood films these days. There are few scenes that make you genuinely smile or laugh as they are infused with just the right dose of humour. Unfortunately for most part Priyan goes with over the top comedy, he uses irrational gags played by the four boys, the often vulgar double meaning jokes and even his characters performances are over the top at times.

There is of course no sane storyline and both the screenplay and execution is often too tacky and corny. The gags and humour seems forced at various places. The music of the film does not make much of an impact and is forgettable. The cinematography is average at times, but at some places it gets too loud with colours and style. The dialogues are corny. The thriller portion is a complete waste as it does not have any impact and in fact bores the audiences. The editing could have been better as several scenes drag on endlessly.

Performances by the actors range from fare to over the top, Tusshar Kapoor does not have many interesting dialogues or even many gags to enact, his performance in terms of comic timing is fare. Kunal Khemu who is enacting a comic role for the first time often hams in scenes. Rajpal Yadav alternates between being genuinely funny and going over the top at some places. Sharman Joshi does a fairly decent job and is likable. Tanushree Dutta and Payal Rohatgi don’t do much except break the male monotony. The rest of the cast is fare.

Unfortunately since the thriller portions don’t really work, there is nothing else that is really novel about the film. It is a mindless comic caper which is just about average. At the box office it may do average due to its comic flavour and also due to the fact that no other interesting film have released lately.
