Dhamaal is an out and out comedy, it has a vibrant script and director Indra Kumar adds the required masala elements of comedy, song n dance n loads of funny gigs etc to the screenplay making it a funny madcap potboiler. It is a comedy for the masses and hence most of the humour is wacky and loud, however it is neither vulgar nor crass. Nonetheless it follows a set formula of four buddies with each of their own eccentricities who get into sticky situations time and again. Somehow they manage to always extricate themselves from the problems; however one day luck has other plans in store for these four buddies and a cop (Sanjay Dutt) who learn of a Rs.10 crore booty hidden in Goa. With five actors who have really good comic timing, loads of funny situations Dhamaal is a thoroughly enjoyable and good comedy seen in a long time.
Dhamaal has been directed by Indra Kumar and the screenplay has been done by Balwinder, Paritossh and Bunty. It stars Sanjay Dutt as Inspector Kabir Nayak, Arshad Warsi as Adi, Ritesh Deshmukh as Roy, Javed Jaffrey as Manav and Ashish Choudhary as Boman. The music for the film has been composed by Adnan Sami.
Dhamaal has four buddies played by Arshad, Ritesh, Javed and Ashish who are good for nothing guys. They each have their idiosyncrasies like Arshad who is Mr. half knowledge on any topic, Javed who is a complete dud, Ritesh who loves to play a detective and finally Ashish who is a complete whiner, but one of the common traits is that they all want to be rich. These four friends do small con jobs and earn their living; however the four always seem to land themselves into trouble one way or the other. One day luck seems to favour the four guys when they learn of a hidden booty in Goa worth Rs.10 crores, but each of them wants to get the treasure just for himself and does not want to share it.
So they each set out on their own mission to get the booty for themselves and it is a race against each other to get to the hidden treasure before the other. The four guys however are also followed by a corrupt cop Sanjay who also learns of the treasure and he too is on the trail set by the four. Each of the characters encounter howlarious situations in their hurry to get to their destination.
Dhamaal has comic one liners that will surely make you join in the laugher, the characters are hilarious and delightful, and they have good comic timing. Indra Kumar incorporates one funny situation after the other faced by each of the four friends. The script however is simple and at times childish but the screenplay has rip roaring comic situations, funny antics and amusing characters, also director Indra Kumar manages to execute the film adeptly. He engages and amuses his audiences with the crazy antics of his characters. The humours is not vulgar or crass.
Dhamaal though does have its weak points such as the script which often seems illogical and irrational. Like all comedies it has the usual, predictable chaos and confusion scenes that don’t really enhance the comedy.
The film is brilliantly funny in the first half and manages to mostly keep up the pace in the second half too. There are hardly any songs and no parallel tracks, so the film has much more of comedy acts to display which gives the audience more comic dose. The music of the film is just about average but suits the comic mood of the film. The cinematography is average and dialogues are suitably funny. Dhamaal’s humour is invigorating, genuinely funny and is not forced.
Performances are great with Sanjay doing a good job as the inspector, he has some truly funny dialogues and his smart Alec act works well, Arshad Warsi does a tuneful job in his role too. Ritesh Deshmukh gives a sparkling performance and Javed Jaffery simply excels with a new comic look, imitations et al. Ashish Choudhary also does a fine job and the rest of the cast is able in their performance.
Overall Dhamaal is an extremely enjoyable comedy which manages to entertain the masses, due to the comic timing of the actors and the invigorating script which pulls out several new comic gigs which are out of the box. At the box-office though it has not had much publicity, it should do well through word of month as it is a comedy which seems to be the flavour of the season and still works well with the crowds. A good comedy film which genuinely brings out the laughter.
