Chhodon Naa Yaar - Movie Review

Chhodon Naa Yaar is not a college cum romantic flick as the title suggests, on the contrary it actually belongs to a genre that has hardly received prominence in recent times. Chhodon Naa Yaar is supposed to be a horror, mysterious flick. However the film suffers from a script that has a half baked idea and has not been translated aptly on-screen. The film begins out like a college drama and is fare but as soon as the horror part is encountered it gets vague and complicated. In fact the mystery remains unsolved even till the end. Many clichéd horror aspects are used that have been seen in other films. Performances by the male leads are average but nonetheless do not manage to take the film higher. A poorly etched idea, with a lackluster screenplay as well as the director’s half hearted effort makes this a poor film.

The film has been produced by Sameer Gaikwad and directed by Dilip Sood. The story has been written by Veena Advani. The film stars Jimmy Shergill, Kim Sharma, Kabir Sadanand, Farid Amiri etc. The music of the film has been composed by Anand Raj Anand.

Jimmy Shergill, Kabir and Farid are three buddies who study mass communication in a Delhi University. The three are typical college kids who love to chill and enjoy, but they also are dedicated to doing well. The three decide to make a film on a rare subject and after extensive research they hit upon an intriguing myth in a North Indian village surrounded by jungles. They decide to go out there and make their film on the mysterious topic of a prevalent spirit and how people who go out there usually never come back alive. However Jimmy’s girlfriend Kim Sharma is against the idea as it involves a lot of risk. Despite the danger, the three friends head out for the remote village in the jungle.

When they reach the village, they face a lot of resistance from the villagers; despite this they begin shooting their documentary film. The three undergo various experiences of seeing the spirit, encountering her, and are plagued with several problems. So will the three of them survive this ordeal and come back alive? Will they be able to shoot their documentary film?

Story writer Veena Advani does not explore the idea completely but leaves it a mystery event till the end. Director Dilip Sood executes some of the horror scenes well as they mange to startle, but at the same time he makes use of many clichés that have already been done to death in horror films. The script merely explores the surface of an idea but does not delve deeper into the story. The mystery angle of the reasons for the spirit roaming around remains unsolved. The end or climax of the film is vague and abrupt. The aatma story seems a bit outdated for today’s times. The suspense is not explored well and hence the film takes a downfall.

The camaraderie and lighter scenes between the three friends is fare, the romantic track between Kim and Jimmy is barely passable. The inclusion of songs in a film with suspense and mystery seems completely irrelevant. The background score is average and the cinematography is fine. Dialogues are just about average. Performances are fare. Jimmy Shergill is average as he gives a decent performance. Kabir Sadanand delivers a good performance and Farid Amiri is fare in his role. Kim Sharma does not have much of a role in the film.

Overall the film’s story is outdated and the screenplay is not captivating enough. Execution and performances are fare but do not manage to make up for the poor script and unsatisfactory screenplay. The film lacks star appeal and has hardly been promoted as a suspense film at all. At the box-office it may have a dismissal performance. A film that comes across as below average.
